“Support Our Troops Week” Art Contest
To show our appreciation for the troops stationed overseas, San Diego Unified and the Xerox Corporation will hold
“Support Our Troops Week” May 21-25. As a kick-off, a K-12 Student Art Contest
is taking place Monday, April 23, through Friday, May 11. Art contest entries will be judged May 14 to 18. The

Final VAPA Training for K-2 Teachers
The final sessions
of the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Department trainings for K-2 teachers
begin Tuesday, May 1. Sessions will be held at Knox, Curie and Loma Portal elementary schools. The trainings

Road Scholar Educator of the Year Awards
The Road Scholar Educator of the Year Awards honor deserving,
experienced educators by providing them with the opportunity to participate in educational adventures throughout the
U.S. and around the world. Current educators with at least 15 years of experience in K-12 education, including
teachers, principals, school librarians, school nurses and guidance counselors, are eligible to apply. The
maximum award is $7,000. The application deadline date is Tuesday, August 1.

Engineering Explorations
The Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD and the Engineering Student Council are hosting
“Engineering Explorations”
on Saturday, April 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at UCSD. The purpose of this free event is to encourage
high school students to consider engineering as a career and to showcase the different engineering disciplines.

Free Japanese Cultural Classes for K-12 Students
The Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park provides free cultural classes and demonstrations about Japanese culture
to K-12 students. Classes include origami making, how to use chopsticks, how to wear kimonos, and learning about a
typical Japanese dinner setting or tea ceremony. Presentations are available in Balboa Park or at school. To
