two new elementary schools opening fall 2007:
Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary will have its
second posting of certificated positions. The year-round school will be a Microsociety Magnet School.
Laura Rodriguez Elementary will have its first
posting of certificated positions, listing up to 20% of the new positions. The school’s calendar has not been
determined.

Nominations for K-8 Student Recognition
The Board of Education will recognize outstanding K-8 grade students from traditional school sites on Tuesday, April 24,
at 4 p.m. Schools should nominate eligible students and teams who have won first place or sweepstakes awards at
the city level or above during the 2006-07 school year. For nomination instructions, see

. The deadline to submit a nomination form
is Friday, April 13. Please Note: The Student Recognition Ceremony for high school students will be held

The Blues Ambassador Scholarship
is awarded to a college bound SDUSD high school senior who has demonstrated interest and achievement in the

amount is $10,000 for a four-year program or $5,000 for a two-year program. The application deadline is

Intelligenic is co-sponsoring the 2007 KidCast Podcasting in the

the City Attorney, have established Wednesday, April 11, as Global Warming Awareness Day.
An assembly featuring Dr. Nigela Hillgarth from Birch Aquarium, City Attorney Mike Aguirre and three

Race for Literacy
The annual Union-Tribune Race for Literacy Kids Magic Mile will be held Saturday, May 5, in Balboa Park.
Last year, more than 50 SDUSD school teams participated in the magic mile. Each child 12 years and under
receives a race T-shirt, a “gold medal” and a new book. Cash awards are presented to the largest teams.
Superintendent Carl Cohn will be an Official Starter for the this year’s Magic Mile. Middle and high
