Special Distribution of March Pay Warrants for Year Round Sites
The March 30 pay day falls on the same day as the beginning of spring break for year round schools. March pay warrants and advices for all year round school monthly and hourly employees will be in the U.S. Mail on Thursday, March 29, and payable on Friday, March 30. Special handling will not be available. For information, contact your payroll technician.

Changes at IMC during Remodel
The front of the Instructional Media Center (IMC) is under construction to accommodate the new Center for Educational Technology, opening fall 2007. During construction, the front doors will be locked and access to the IMC and TMC will be through the side doors. The Curriculum Library will remain open for browsing. The Multimedia Library will not be available for self selection of materials. Materials from that collection can still be ordered by phone, online or in person. Be Part of a New School
The first list of certificated vacancies for Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary School, opening in fall 2007, is posted in the Employment section of the district website now through Wednesday, March 28. Beautify Your Campus
Does your campus, community park or local beach need some spring-cleaning? You supply the volunteers and the district’s Recycling Program will supply gloves, bags, promotional posters and information about organizing a cleanup. Safety Reminder
Planners of carnivals, fairs or other events need to know that the use of astrojumps, large inflatable slides, trampolines, and dunk tanks is prohibited on district property. Mini-trampolines or similar devices used for special education or adaptive physical education programs are permitted. Public Auction Set for April 5
The district is holding a public auction on Thursday, April 5, at the Supply Center Yard, 2351 Cardinal Lane. Obsolete, beyond economical repair and unusable-by-the-district furniture and equipment will be for sale. Registration and preview start at 9 a.m.; auction at 10 a.m. A $200 cash refundable deposit is required to receive a bidder number. Truancy Letter B Training
The Mandated Cost Unit is offering a Truancy Letter B training. Participants will learn the definition of a “truant” and how to use Zangle to run reports on truant students. Training sessions will be held Monday, March 26, and Wednesday, March 28, from 10 to 11 a.m., and Friday, March 30, from 1 to 2 p.m., in room B-6 at the Fremont Training Center. Toyota International Teacher Program
In October 2007, the Toyota International Teacher Program will send 20 secondary (grades 7-12) school teachers on a fully funded, 10-day study program to the Galapagos Islands. The application deadline is Monday, April 23.

Parent Group of the Year 2007
The Parent Group of the Year Contest is an excellent opportunity to showcase all parent groups – PTA, PTSA, PTO, etc. – while giving schools the chance to win prizes and cash up to $8,000. The deadline for entries is Thursday, May 31.
NEA Foundation Student Achievement Grants
The National Education Association (NEA) Foundation Student Achievement Grant awards $5,000 grants to practicing U.S. public school teachers in grades K-12. The next application MS Word deadline is Friday, June 1.

Student Opportunities
QuestBridge College Prep Scholarship
Questbridge is a non-profit organization dedicated to giving high-achieving low-income students resources during the college application process. More than 800 high school juniors will be awarded scholarship packages that will include one or more of the following: full scholarship to summer program, college admissions counseling and attendance at college preparatory conferences. The deadline to apply is Saturday, March 31.
Kids Do Shakespeare
The Second Annual San Diego Student Shakespeare Festival Acrobat PDF will be held from 12:30 to 5 p.m., on Saturday, April 28, in Balboa Park. The free event features performances by students in elementary, middle and high schools. For information, go to www.sandiegoshakespearesociety.org.

Parent Forum
Parents are invited to join Superintendent Cohn, Area 3 Superintendent Rich Cansdale and Assistant Superintendent for High Schools Nellie Meyer at the next district Parent Forum Acrobat PDF being held Monday, March 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Kearny High School Library. Although the meeting is being held in Area 3, parents from throughout the district are welcome to attend.
Share the Joy of Music
The City/County Choral Honor Concert, featuring elementary, middle and secondary school students from throughout the County, will be held Saturday, March 24, at 7 p.m., at Brown Chapel, Point Loma Nazarene University. In The News
SDUSD was featured in a Fox 6 News story about The Price of Absence. Fox 6 News reporter Eric Collins visited Birney Elementary on Wednesday, March 15, and interviewed Principal Amanda Hammond-Williams. Area Superintendents Vince Matthews and Delfino Aleman were interviewed in studio on the Fox in the Morning show on Thursday, March 16.

The opening of Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary was the subject of a report on KPBS radio. Roy MacPhail, director, Instructional Facilities Planning, was interviewed on March 14 by reporter Ana Tintocalis.

La Jolla High science and physics instructor Martin Teachworth received a $17,500 grant from Best Buy for his proposal to lead an electric car conversion project at the school. The La Jolla Light ran an article about Teachworth and his project in the March 6 edition.
