Ed Center Information Desk Welcomes Visitors
The Eugene Brucker Education Center has a new Information Desk in the lobby near the auditorium. Ana Maria Ayub is assigned to the desk, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to help direct visitors and callers to offices and departments at the complex. Employees should contact Ana Maria at aayub@sandi.net or (619) 725-8072 with information about upcoming Ed Center events or meetings that involve visitors. Ed Center offices/departments should make sure that the information desk has an up-to-date roster of current employees, telephone numbers, and locations. Six Teachers Receive National Board Certification
A total of 149 district teachers have now earned National Board Certification. Congratulations to elementary school teachers Skye Bridwell (Audubon), Susan Lopez (Nye), Joseph Wainio (Horton) and Veronica Youso (Rosa Parks), middle school teacher Tona Wilson (Clark) and high school teacher Sylvia James (San Diego High School of International Studies) on receiving their certification in December. Reminder: Enrollment Options Application Deadline is January 31
The 2007-08 Enrollment Options priority application deadline is now January 31, a change from the March 15 deadline in previous years. All Enrollment Options Choice, VEEP, Magnet and Program Improvement School Choice applications received during the priority period will be placed on the first wait list to be released to schools in mid-March. Parents can submit an application at any district location. Enrollment Options posters for display (English Acrobat PDF | Spanish Acrobat PDF) are available through the Enrollment Options Office at eoptions@sandi.net, (619) 725-7153, or the website.

Deadline for Teacher of the Year Nominations is Friday
The deadline to submit school site 2007-08 Teacher of the Year nominations Acrobat PDF is Friday, January 26. Nomination forms MS Word can be emailed to lzintz@sandi.net, faxed to (619) 725-5576, or mailed to Room 2145 at the Ed Center. School Site Teachers of the Year will be recognized at the May 8 Day of the Teacher Celebration. Nominees also have the opportunity to apply to the district-level competition. Spring Intersession Posting Begins
Opportunities for certificated staff at year-round schools to work during Spring Intersession (April 9 – 20) will be posted on the PeopleSoft eRecruit system from January 26 to February 28. Staff who transferred from a traditional calendar school site to a year-round calendar school site after July 1, 2006, may need to work Intersession to make-up for days missed in July. Check with your Payroll Specialist. Applications must be completed and submitted using the on-line application. For assistance, call (619) 725-8086 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Prevention and Intervention Fair
Learn about available intervention programs that address behavior and academic issues interfering with student achievement by attending the Prevention and Intervention Fair Acrobat PDF being held January 24 and 25, from noon to 4:30 p.m., at the Ballard Parent Center. Free Grant Writing Workshop
SDUSD Office of Resource Development and BP are collaborating to sponsor a two-hour grant writing workshop Acrobat PDF for educators interested in applying for special grants offered under the A+ for Energy program sponsored by BP. The free workshop is being held Tuesday, February 6, from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., at Maintenance & Operations. The deadline to submit a registration form MS Word is Tuesday, January 30. CSA Extends Membership Deadline to January 26
The Community Service Association (CSA), the district's employee charitable club, has extended its annual membership campaign deadline to Friday, January 26. CSA collects and distributes funds to local nonprofit agencies on behalf of district employees. Employees interested in joining can obtain a payroll deduction (membership) form from school and work sites. Completed forms should be sent to CSA via school mail by January 26. Professional Tools: Online Resources
Educators need information from comprehensive, user-friendly, online resources to improve learning and increase student performance. The Discover Program is offering two courses, Online Resources 101 and Online Resources 202, to provide information about appropriate online resources that can support student learning and research. Become a Distinguished Teacher in Residence
Apply to become a Distinguished Teacher in Residence Acrobat PDF in the College of Education at California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM). SDUSD is one of several districts participating in this unique opportunity to educate future teachers. The deadline to submit an application MS Word is Monday, February 12. Learn Financial Wisdom for Life
A two-day financial literacy course Acrobat PDF designed to teach real world money smarts, real-life tips and skills is being held Saturday, January 27 and February 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Marshall Middle School. Family Histories Essay Competition for Grades 6 -12
The New Americans Immigration Museum and Learning Center is now accepting essays for its 6th Annual Essay Competition. Students in grades 6-12 are welcome to apply. Water Conservation Poster Contest for Grades 1-6
The City of San Diego Water Department encourages all students in grades 1- 6 to enter the 7th Annual Water Conservation Poster Contest Acrobat PDF. Each student will receive a certificate of participation. Winners will receive a U.S. Savings Bond, four tickets to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and a Certificate of Excellence. Maritime Museum Offers Field Trips
The San Diego Maritime Museum offers field trips and tours throughout the year to school children of all ages. The Museum has many historic ships, including the Star of India, the oldest actively sailed ship; the Berkeley, an 1898 steam ferry boat; a Soviet submarine; and two other sailing ships including the HMS Surprise from the movie Master and Commander. MCRD Command Museum Offers Free Education Classes

In The News
The re-opening of Lincoln High School in fall 2007 was the subject of an article in the San Diego Union-Tribune. On Saturday, January 20, hundreds of graduates from the old Lincoln High School brought their children and grandchildren to learn about the new Lincoln High School.

Budding playwright Ariel Cowell, a junior at University City High School, was featured in an article in the San Diego Union-Tribune and an article in the University City Golden Triangle News. Ariel was one of four winners of the 22nd annual California Young Playwrights Contest.
