Schools, Offices Close for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday
All schools and central offices will be closed Monday, January 15, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. Resources for commemorating Dr. King can be found on the district website.

Discover Program Seeking Instructors
Do you have knowledge that you would like to share with other professionals? The Discover Program is seeking instructors to teach classes to employees. The Discover Program offers a variety of professional development and training opportunities to both certificated and classified employees. Courses provide opportunities for teachers to earn district salary enhancement credit. Instructors are paid $43.43 per hour for teaching time and $29.31 for preparation time spent outside of assigned workday. GATE Department Distinguished Lecture Series
The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Department welcomes all interested individuals to attend the next Distinguished Lecture Series program on Wednesday, January 17, in the Education Center auditorium. Both sessions will be presented by Dr. Carolyn Light. Reservations are not required.
  • 4 to 6 p.m. - Educator Series (open to all), "Meeting the Needs of Gifted Children: Social and Emotional Considerations"
  • 7 to 8:30 p.m. - Parent Series (open to all), "Contemplating the Challenging Concept of Creativity"

Student Opportunities
Essay Competition for 4th and 5th Graders
The State Bar of California is holding an essay contest Acrobat PDF for 4th and 5th graders. The essay contest asks students to tell why a certain law is useful or not, or to recommend a new law that affects kids. The top prize is a $250 savings bond. Entry deadline is Thursday, February 1. Blacks In Government Greater San Diego Chapter Scholarship
Blacks in Government, a non-profit organization for federal, state, county and local government employees, is offering a $500 scholarship to African-American students who reside within the City or County of San Diego and who will be attending their first year of a four-year college or university in fall 2007. Funding Alert
School Library Award Program
The Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming recognizes, promotes and supports excellence in humanities programming in elementary and middle school libraries that serve children K-8. The winning school library will receive a $4,000 cash award. The deadline application is Tuesday, February 27. For information and application form, visit the website.

Parent Forum Set for February 7
Parent Voices for Education San Diego (PVSD) presents a Parent Forum (English Acrobat PDF | Spanish Acrobat PDF), Continuing our Conversation with Superintendent Carl Cohn and Interacting with the Area Superintendents, on Wednesday, February 7, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Harold J. Ballard Parent. The forum will include a discussion on the new district leadership structure and how it affects all of us. Child Care will be provided and Spanish translation will be offered. Nominate Your School Site’s Teacher of the Year
Recognize excellence. Nominations are now being accepted for school site 2007-08 Teacher of the Year Acrobat PDF candidates. The deadline to submit a nomination form MS Word is Friday, January 26. All nominated teachers will be recognized at the May 8 Board of Education meeting. Nominees also have the opportunity to apply to the district-level competition. Dailard Elementary Celebrates 30th
Dailard Elementary is celebrating its 30th birthday on Friday, March 23, at 5:30 p.m., at the school. Former and current staff members, students and parents of student(s) are invited to attend. The evening’s festivities include entertainment by the school chorus, speakers, Memory Lane exhibit, giving opportunities to buy books for the library and dinner (for a nominal cost).
