2006-07 Budget Process
During February and March, school sites and central offices are preparing their budgets for the 2006-07 school year. For employees and parents interested in learning more about the district's 2006-07 budget planning process, several new web pages have been added to the SDCS website to provide a better understanding of the process. The "Big Picture" is an overview of the district budget, the budgeting process, and the thought and time management processes that assist in developing a student focused school site budget. Additionally, a Budget Timeline fact sheet is available in English Acrobat PDF, Spanish Acrobat PDF and Somali Acrobat PDF to provide employees and parents with concise information about the year-round process of building the district's budget. In the News
Last week, Dingeman Elementary School students were featured in a news story aired on KGTV-TV (Channel 10) for their efforts to raise money for their teacher, Miss Millar, who lost her grandfather and home in a tragic fire in Mira Mesa.

KFMB-TV (Channel 8) was present at Grant Elementary School on Tuesday, February 14 when Harlem Globetrotter Anthony Blakes visited Michelle Harris’ classroom.  Grant Elementary 1st grade student Colin Cretain’s grandfather entered him in a contest to bring a Globetrotter to the school and won the contest. As a result, Blakes spent an hour with the 1st grade students, talking to the children and demonstrating some of his ball-handling moves.  As a special treat, each child in the class received free tickets for his or her family to attend the Globetrotters game at the ipayOne Center.

Later in the week, on February 15, KGTV-TV was present at McKinley Elementary School to witness San Diego Chargers linebacker Donnie Edwards’ visit to the campus. Edwards was at McKinley to promote “Jump for Life,” a program aimed at combating childhood obesity through fitness, nutrition and goal setting. Edwards also visited Monroe Clark Middle School.

KUSI-TV (Channel 9), KNSD-TV (Channel 7/39), XETV-TV (Channel 6), KGTV-TV, and KFMB-TV camped out at San Diego High School on February 15, hoping to catch a glimpse of Oprah Winfrey and Bill and Melinda Gates.  The trio visited the school as part of a future Oprah show.

Martha Thompson of Point Loma High School was named “Student of the Week” by XETV-TV. Thompson, the school’s ASB president, is an athlete (ballet and field hockey) and is actively involved in the Youth and Government program. According to Point Loma High Principal Bobbie Samilson, Thompson “is the sort of leader others want to follow. In addition to this she is kind, thoughtful, and a real listener.”

When Encanto Elementary School held a special celebration to thank the community for donations made to replace funds stolen over the summer, KGTV was on the story. One Good Samaritan donated $4,000 to the school fund, which was matched by US Bank. Total donations to the school equaled more than $12,000.

Friday, February 17, television personality Rod Luck of KUSI-TV shined the spotlight on Clairemont High School drama students involved in a production of the musical “Grease.” Students sang and danced their way through three numbers during the morning’s broadcast, including “Greased Lightning,” “Summer Lovin’” and “We Go Together.”

Also on Friday, February 17, KUSI-TV meteorologist Renee Kohn stopped by Audubon Elementary School, giving her weather forecast from the third grade classroom of Sharon Kitchen.

The San Diego Union-Tribune ran a story on Sunday, February 19, exploring the challenges and rewards of teaching at low-performing schools. District teachers Sabrina Woods (Chollas Elementary), Julia Groff (Roosevelt Middle), and Talina Del Rio (Jackson Elementary) were featured in the article.

“'Hardest fun you'll ever have,'” an article that also appeared in the February 19 edition of The San Diego Union-Tribune, covered a competition where “ eight high school teams vied for the bragging rights of best teen-made robot in San Diego.” Called a robot scrimmage, the competition included teams from Madison High, San Diego High Tech High, and Preuss School UCSD.
