In The News
Last summer, vandals burned down playground equipment at Silver Gate Elementary, destroying swing sets and landscaping. On January 19, the school held a special ribbon-cutting ceremony in honor of its playground reconstruction, including new landscaping which was funded by $26,000 in community donations. KNSD-TV (Channel 7/39) covered the ceremony and The San Diego Union-Tribune ran an article.

Spanish-language station KBNT (Channel 17) was present at Knox Elementary School’s 29th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. March. The march brought approximately 2,000 children from across San Diego together with community leaders, including SDCS trustees John de Beck, Shelia Jackson and Katherine Nakamura, in a celebration of Dr. King’s life and vision. Together, the group marched 1.5 miles around the school in a show of strength and unity. The San Diego Union-Tribune published an article about the march on January 21.

Rod Luck also visited Knox last week. On January 19, the KUSI-TV (Channel 9/51) personality highlighted the school’s “6 to 6” program and showcased the district’s breakfast program. That morning, the Food Services Department was conducting a taste test with students of potential new breakfast offerings.

Jessica McCreary, principal at Language Academy, appeared on the KPBS-FM radio show "These Days” on January 23. The program, which covers the issues, events and cultural trends that shape San Diego and California, was dedicated to language immersion.

Tom Fudge, host of “These Days,” also spoke with Superintendent Carl A. Cohn on January 23. The two discussed Cohn’s education goals for this year and the challenges that lie ahead. To listen to the interview, click here.

The San Diego Union-Tribune ran an article about the possible delayed opening of Lincoln High School. The district met with the community on January 25 to discuss a full and complete opening in September 2007.
