Brief Explanation:

Next fall, 2001-02 dropout data will be collected for the 2002 California Basic Educational Data Systems (CBEDS) report. This circular provides basic information about the data collection and the general rules that apply when schools document the whereabouts of students who dropped this year.

The 2001-02 dropout period ran from April 5, 2001, through April 12, 2002. Your registrar has maintained documentation, including transcript requests and other reliable information, on the educational status of former students. Next fall you will review drop rosters sent from the Accountability and Research (A&R) Office to document the whereabouts of students who left your school during the dropout period and are no longer enrolled in any district school. A&R will identify dropouts from the roster documentation and then will send rosters of identified dropouts to schools to confirm that the listed students are dropouts. This is the school's last chance to make corrections; when this is completed the dropout list is final. An administrative circular will be posted on the district's web page before the opening of school and will announce dates for dropout data collection activities.

Attached is general information used in the identification of dropouts.
