Brief Explanation:

The Student Advocacy 2002 Student Awards honoring 4th through 12th grade students, particularly African American, Latino, and other diverse students, will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2002, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Open Air Theater at San Diego State University. The awards are designed to celebrate school commitment and excellence, student achievement, community service, leadership, and human understanding. Schools are invited to select six students to receive one of the following awards:

  • Mahatma Ghandi Human Understanding Award
  • Isabel Thing Leadership Award
  • Cesar E. Chavez Community Service Award
  • Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award
  • Sor Juana Inez De La Cruz Academic and Personal Excellence Award
  • Madame C. J. Walker Academic and Personal Excellence Award

Please call the Student Advocacy Office for award information and nomination forms. Schools are required to pay a total of $120 for student awardees. Students must be chaperoned by a parent and/or a school representative. There is no charge for adult chaperones or parents. The school is responsible for assuring that every award recipient has transportation to and from this event. A completed registration form must be received in the Student Advocacy Office no later than 10 a. m., Friday, May 10, 2002. Schools submitting the completed registration packet will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A school's registration will not be considered complete unless the required forms and payment are completed.
