Attachment 1 - Required Health Education Grades 6-8 & 10 Instruction Summary

Brief Explanation:

On August 8, 2000, the Board formally approved a delivery system to provide health/life skills instruction in Grades 6-8. A delivery system for Grades 9-12 was approved on May 22, 2001. Completion of the instruction fulfills state mandates and Board-adopted Health/Life Skills Education standards. (See attachment) Training for those teachers assigned to implement the required health/life skills instruction must be completed before instruction begins. Many teachers have already been trained and have implemented the required health/life skills instruction. However, if you have any teachers who have not received the training, please coordinate their attendance at the needed training described below.

Student Support Services Department will provide training for teachers who are newly assigned to teach Grade 6 Family Life; Grades 6, 7, and 8 Life Skills Training; Middle School Sex Education and Grade 10 Drawing the Line. Your Life Skills teacher will contact you to assist in identifying teachers who should attend. Health Education Academy for Teachers (which provides the training) will be offered during the week of July 15-19, 2002. Teachers who are not on year-round schedules will be compensated at the workshop rate for their attendance. Substitutes will be provided for year-round sites. Life Skills teachers will continue to assist staff on site as needed.
