Eligible employees in the School Police Services bargaining unit may elect to participate in a tuition reimbursement program related to professional development. The fund is set aside to encourage unit members to acquire the knowledge, skills, and certifications necessary to become police officers, or for sworn officers to improve their skills. Unit members who voluntarily participate in professional development activities may qualify for a reimbursement of educational expenses up to a maximum of $500 per unit member per semester (spring; summer or fall; maximum of two semesters per year) for tuition, registration, books, and/or laboratory fees. Reimbursement is dependent upon receiving a grade of "C" or better or a pass/credit for non-graded courses. Eligible unit members are active monthly employees in the School Police Services bargaining unit who have completed their initial one-year probationary period with the district. Unit members receiving allowances from federal, state, or local government sources toward the same reimbursable costs are not eligible for reimbursement under this program to the extent the reimbursement would duplicate allowances from these other sources. Only course work from accredited colleges, universities, or certified police training academies approved by the State Department of Education, Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) or recognized law enforcement-related seminars will be accepted for reimbursement under this program. Participation in eligible course work or seminars shall occur only during non-work time. To receive consideration for reimbursement for the spring semester of 2001, the attached application form must be completed and returned to the Employee Services Department, Eugene Brucker Education Center, Room 1140, no later than 5 p.m., July 20, 2001. All applicants will receive notification of the status of their application within 60 days of the application deadline. Important: When applications for educational expense reimbursement exceed the total funds available per semester, eligible applicants will be reimbursed in a reduced amount proportionate to the relationship their respective claim bears to the total claims submitted.
