Rolling blackouts (temporary power loss) are expected to occur throughout the summer and into fall. The State Department of Education has determined that if students are not released from school, meals must be made available when power is restored. Rolling blackouts may affect the menu and the time meal service can occur. Limited advance notice, varied times of occurrence, short blackout duration, and facility limitations require each situation be considered individually. In the event of a rolling blackout, site administrators will be contacted by a Food Services Department representative to discuss site needs. Food safety will be the primary consideration in determining what action, if any, will be required. In those situations where food safety may be compromised, the food service manager will consider the following options: meal time delay, meal preparation at unaffected site, menu change, service of cold and ambient temperature foods only. Questions about the information in this circular may be directed to Bob Pels, food services assistant director, at (858) 627-7303 or Ernie Macon, food services facilities and equipment supervisor, at (858) 627-7304. |
