Earlier this year, the State Attorney General and the Superintendent of
Public Instruction published a guide to provide schools with tools and
resources necessary to develop a critical incident response plan. One of
the recommendations was for each school to develop a "Crisis Response
Box" that would contain vital information for public safety personnel
responding to a school-related event.
In June of 2000, a meeting was held with various school principals and other support service personnel to review the crisis response box concept and implement a plan, if deemed appropriate. The review group concluded the response box concept had merit and should be adopted by the district. Within the box, schools would include their comprehensive school safety plans (required by state law), as well as other items recommended in the guide. The review group also felt some items should not be included within the box because they are either found elsewhere or handled differently pursuant to district emergency procedures. During the month of October, School Police personnel will arrange to
meet with each school site and child development center administrator, or
their designee. School Police personnel will provide a new Crisis Response
Box, facilitate the necessary steps to create and organize the box, and
provide in-service training as necessary. District Procedure 5000 will be
revised to include the Crisis Response Box requirements for future
