Approximately 22,000 parents, college students, business
partnership personnel, senior citizens, and community members currently
volunteer throughout the district. As the number of volunteers increases
with expanded community support and as TB cases continue to increase in the
urban population, it is crucial that compliance is maintained regarding
State of California Education Code and San Diego City Schools district
procedures for volunteer TB clearance.
Please review the following information regarding
tuberculosis clearance for volunteers and ensure that all volunteers comply
with state law and district procedures.
Official volunteer status: An official school volunteer
must: 1) have a district Volunteer Application on file, 2) have a
tuberculosis clearance on file, and 3) sign in at the site's main office.
Tuberculosis clearance is mandatory for all who volunteer at
a school site on a regular basis. School volunteers cannot begin to work
until tuberculosis clearance is completed. Please refer to the following

Opportunities for TB Skin Testing are provided by school
nurses at school sites. In addition, the Comprehensive Health & Wellness
Office provides skin testing in central locations. See attachment for dates,
times, and locations.
The TB clearance from the school nurse or private physician
should be kept with the pink and yellow copies of the Volunteer Application
at the site. (Remember to submit the white copy of the Volunteer Application
to the Partnerships Office, Education Center, Room 2121.)
To request TB cards and volunteer applications, contact the
Partnerships in Education Department at (619) 725-5592. All other volunteer
questions should be directed to Ellen Tiffany at (619) 725-5594.
