Brief Explanation: On March 2, 2000, Superintendent Alan Bersin announced the beginning of the district’s Campus Crime Stoppers program. In the three months following, to the end of the 1999-2000 school year, Campus Crime Stoppers received 38 tips relating to crimes committed on school district property or against the school district. Of those calls, 12 tipsters were recommended for monetary reward for providing information instrumental in solving those crime cases. With the start of the 2000-2001 school term, we anticipate a large number of calls to Campus Crime Stoppers, offering tips helpful in solving crime. And as the word spreads among students that Campus Crime Stoppers is becoming a popular avenue for reporting school crime, the anticipated result will be crime prevention. The program, developed by School Police Services in conjunction with San Diego County Crime Stoppers, pays cash rewards to students or other persons who supply information, or tips, which are instrumental in solving crimes committed on or against school district property. This includes crimes such as vandalism, arson or other crimes causing damage to district property. The program incorporates an anonymous Tipline, and tipsters will not need to reveal their identity at any time. School Police Services is again distributing posters to each middle level and senior high school campus in an effort to disseminate information about the program to students throughout the district. Principals are asked to help in making the appropriate notifications about the Campus Crime Stoppers Program by printing the attached letter English • Español • Cambodian • Hmong • Lao • Vietnamese (PDF format) and including it in parent bulletins, or sending it as an attachment to the parents of your students. If you wish to add your own thoughts in an attachment, feel free to do so. This will assist us in keeping parents informed of the steps the school district is taking to keep our schools safer for their children and our employees. We have emphasized in this letter to parents that the Tipline is completely anonymous, and there is no requirement that a tipster identify him/herself. If you have any questions regarding Campus Crime Stoppers, or if we can
be of any assistance, please call School Police Lieutenant Michael
Hentigan at (619) 725-7005. Thank you in advance for your help in making
Campus Crime Stoppers the success we believe it will be. |
