Brief Explanation:

Eligible members of the Paraeducators bargaining unit may elect to participate in a reimbursement program related to professional development. The fund is set aside to encourage paraeducators to continue their educational and professional development, to promote activities which will assist paraeducators in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to improve job performance, and to promote the opportunity for paraeducators to reach the maximum level of their professional potential.

Paraeducators who participate in professional development activities related to job-connected skills or potential careers with the district may qualify for a reimbursement of up to a maximum of $75 per person per semester (spring, summer or fall; maximum of two semesters per year) for tuition, registration, books, and/or laboratory fees. Reimbursement is dependent upon receiving a grade of "C" or better or a pass/credit for non-graded courses.

Eligible employees are active monthly employees in the Paraeducators bargaining unit that have completed their initial one-year probationary period with the district. Each eligible paraeducator must have a satisfactory work record with no overall "requires improvement" evaluation rating within the preceding 12 months. Paraeducators receiving allowances from federal, state, or local government sources toward the same reimbursable costs are not eligible for reimbursement under this program to the extent the reimbursement would duplicate allowances from these other sources.

Only course work from accredited colleges or universities, business, or technical schools approved by the State Department of Education will be accepted for participation in this program. Continuing education classes and workshop classes are not eligible for participation in the program.

To receive consideration for reimbursement for the summer or fall semester of 2000, the attached application form (PDF format) must be completed and returned to the Employee Services Department, Eugene Brucker Education Center, Room 1140, no later than

5 p.m., October 6, 2000. All applicants will receive notification of the status of their application within 60 days of the application deadline.

Important: When applications for professional development reimbursement exceed the total funds available per semester, selection will be by lottery.

Questions regarding this program should be directed to Donis Armenta, Employee Services Department, at (619) 725-8140 or by e-mail.   darmenta@mail.sandi.net
