Subject: Healthy Schools Act of 2000

Persons Concerned:
All Employees
Reference: Assembly Bill No. 2260

Brief Explanation:

Assembly Bill No. 2260 established the Healthy Schools Act of 2000 and is effective January 1, 2001. This Act requires that the preferred methods of pest control at school sites be those utilizing effective, least toxic pest management practices (Integrated Pest Management). Among other requirements, the act mandates the posting of a warning sign in each area of the school site(s) where a pesticide is to be applied. Except in an emergency, the sign will be posted 24 hours prior to application and remain posted for 72 hours after application.

This new law also requires that the district annually provide to all staff and parents/guardians of pupils enrolled at a school site written notification naming all pesticide products that are expected to be applied at their facility during the upcoming year. Notification will be mailed to staff and parents/guardians annually with the annual informational mailing that takes place in August, prior to the start of each academic year. The same information will be posted on the district’s web site with specific and additional references. Sites will continue to receive written notice in advance of any pesticide application.

The district has been practicing Integrated Pest Management for the past several years. As a result, our use of pesticides has decreased significantly. The district’s pest control staff will do everything possible to identify and resolve pest problems before they become a nuisance at the school site. We continue to use pesticides only as a last resort. Your cooperation in enforcing the guidelines listed below will help prevent or reduce insect and rodent infestations and ultimately reduce the need for pesticide applications. The use of any pesticides at school sites or on district property by unauthorized personnel is unlawful and a violation of the district’s Integrated Pest Management Policy.

As part of the Integrated Pest Management program to control roaches, ants, mice, rats, flies, etc., it is requested that all staff members and students:

  1. Eat only in designated dining areas when possible.
  2. Store food in sealed containers, preferably glass or metal, whenever it is kept in cupboards, storerooms, lounges, desk drawers, etc.
  3. Clean up spills, crumbs, etc., as soon as possible when they occur.
  4. Promptly place all organic garbage in waste containers. It is advisable that all waste containers have plastic liners and that liners be changed daily.
  5. Rinse out beverage cans being saved for recycling purposes and store in sealed plastic bags.
  6. Clean coffee cups, dirty dishes, and utensils promptly, and empty sink strainers regularly.
  7. Dispose of newspapers and excess paperwork promptly (excess paperwork provides harborage for pests).
  8. Send all artwork created with foodstuff home as soon as possible.
  9. Notify the site building services/plant operations supervisor or pest management staff as soon as you identify a real or potential pest control problem.

Collectively we can create a safer, more comfortable environment for students and staff alike and fulfill both the spirit and intent of the Healthy Schools Act of 2000.
