No. 560          Facilities Management

Date: April 11, 2001
To: All School Principals, Child Development Center Administrators, Division and Department Heads
Subject: Cellular Phones, Quality of Service
Department and/or
Persons Concerned:
All District GTE Wireless Cellular Phone Users
Reference: None

Brief Explanation:

The Telecommunications Department has received feedback concerning poor quality of service on the new cell phones. Staff recently addressed these concerns to the GTE representative who related to the department that she and her supervisors are aware of the problems that district staff, as well as their other customers, are experiencing. The GTE representative indicated that San Diego County is one of the last in the region to still be using the obsolete analog telecommunications switching equipment. GTE, soon to become AT&T Wireless, is currently upgrading the analog equipment to digital as quickly as possible.

The new cell phones exchanged earlier will be automatically switched over to the digital system after March 31, 2001. All other cell phones will function until mid-June and will be exchanged by the end of April 2001. Until the new digital system is fully activated, you may continue to experience some technical difficulties.

Beyond these difficulties, if the cell phone you are using does not function at all, is broken or has been activated incorrectly, contact the Telecommunications Department at (858) 627-7200 for assistance.
