Brief Explanation:

LEARN & SERVE San Diego, the district’s service learning program, is entering its seventh year of promoting service learning as a teaching strategy in support of student achievement. This strategy allows the teacher to integrate service naturally within the academic curriculum and foster the students’ lifelong commitment to service. It is a method by which young people learn "beyond the classroom" by placing curricular concepts in the context of real-life situations. The strategy encompasses major components: planning, action, reflection and celebration.

The 2000-2001 LEARN & SERVE San Diego "Roll Out" packet provides information on service learning and the LEARN & SERVE San Diego program. The "roll out" packet will be distributed to all schools and includes:

  • documents outlining the resources available;

  • a newly revised Service Learning Manual for Administrators, Teachers, and Agency Personnel;

  • 2000-2001 Guide to Youth Volunteer Opportunities, listing approximately 300 community agencies in need of youth volunteers; and

  • Authorization for Student Participation in Service Learning and Community Service.

If you have questions or would like additional packets, please contact Nancy Hemmings, district service learning coordinator, in the Partnerships in Education Department at (619) 725-5597.
