To: All School Principals, Child Development Center Administrators, Division and Department Heads
Subject: EXTERIOR PAINTING OF PORTABLE CLASSROOMS
Department and/or
Persons Concerned:
All School Principals
Reference: None

Brief Explanation:

As Proposition MM activities have begun and the district continues to move portable classrooms onto school sites, many questions and requests have arisen regarding the painting of the portables. In response, the district has developed a new set of guidelines regarding the exterior painting of portable classroom buildings as documented below:

Existing Portable Classrooms at a School

When the exteriors of the permanent buildings at a school site are painted, the school principal can choose to have the existing portable classrooms painted to match the permanent buildings at the site or choose to have the portable classrooms painted using the current standard exterior portable classroom paint colors (beige walls and fascia, with doors and trim to match the permanent buildings).

New and Relocated Portable Classrooms Moved onto a School Site

When a new or relocated portable classroom is moved onto a school site and does not match the existing portables, the school principal can choose to have the portable classrooms painted to match the permanent buildings at the site or choose to have the portable painted using the district standard portable classroom paint colors. All newly constructed portables will not receive their final exterior paint until moved onto a site.

The moving of a new or relocated portable classroom onto a site with other existing portables will not cause the existing portables to be repainted until the exterior of the permanent buildings at the site are painted or the existing portables are eligible to be painted. At the time the portables are scheduled to be painted, the school principal can choose to have the portables painted to match the permanent buildings at the site or choose to have the portables painted using the current standard portable classroom paint colors.

Any other painting options for portable classrooms will require the commitment of site funds for the cost of painting and the approval of the district architect.

This policy applies only to district standard portable classrooms. Prefabricated and leased relocatable classrooms will be moved onto school sites with the factory-supplied colors.

Any questions should be directed to Jim Watts, district architect, at (858) 627-7241.
