Monday, January 15, 2001, is a declared school holiday to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. Consistent with federal laws and in keeping with the tradition of California districts, San Diego City Schools will observe Dr. King’s birthday with site-sponsored learning activities, ceremonies, and celebrations. These site activities should focus on the events of Dr. King’s life, as well as the social issues to which he was completely dedicated until his assassination on April 4, 1968. Dr. King had a love for humanity that spanned all races and ethnicities. He fought against racial segregation and for equal voting rights, carrying his campaign to many cities throughout the United States. His role in the civil rights movement helped focus worldwide attention on the nonviolent approach to solving problems. He delivered his famous "I Have A Dream" speech during the 1963 march in Washington. In 1964, at the age of 35, he became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. In addition to site activities, a coalition of San Diego organizations convened by the National Conference for Community and Justice is sponsoring the following observance of Dr. King’s birthday: ALL-PEOPLE’S BREAKFAST Reservations should be made as soon as possible by
