Last year, hundreds of San Diego
Unified School District (SDUSD) students entered the "WHEN NOT TO
KEEP A SECRET" National Essay Contest sponsored by the Friends of the
San Diego Psychiatric Society, American Psychiatric Association Alliance,
9th District Parent Teachers Association, and the SDUSD
Intervention Services Department. Two SDUSD students placed second and
third in the state essay competition and attended the award ceremony at
the state capitol.
"WHEN NOT TO KEEP A SECRET" is a creative essay project that gives students permission to break a confidence, to trust a significant adult, and understand that violent talk can lead to violent behavior. In order to write on this topic, students can tell the truth about situations that have hurt or frightened them. Your Life Skills teacher will distribute contest rules and entry forms. Entries will be accepted by your school's contest coordinator (Life Skills teacher) between October 30, 2000, and November 22, 2000. They will also collect and judge the essays along with the sponsors. The contest is voluntary for sites and teachers. We invite you to ask your teachers to support this contest, which helps fulfill health and literacy standards. If you have any questions, please call Marcia Heinrichs, program specialist, at (858) 627-7577. Thank you for your support. |
