The district is again conducting the government-required verification process on a small sampling of students certified to receive free or reduced-price meal benefits. Current law requires that the verification process be completed by December 15, 2000.

The verification process will be carried out by the Food Services Department without any major involvement by the school sites. The verification steps are as follows:

(1) A "focused" sampling method that targets applications with a high likelihood of containing errors will be used to select one and one-half percent of all approved free or reduced-price meal applications on file as of October 31, 2000.

(2) The central Food Services Office is now mailing notification letters (Attachment A, four pages) to the selected households to obtain written documentation that will verify eligibility for free or reduced-price meal benefits. A self-addressed, stamped return envelope will be provided.

(3) Households will be notified by mail (Attachment B) of the verification process results. Schools will only be notified when and if a student’s eligibility changes.

(4) Households that fail to respond to the notification of verification will be contacted once more by phone and, if necessary, a third time with a carry-home letter sent with their student before benefits will be terminated due to nonresponse.

(5) If the received documentation fails to confirm current eligibility for free or reduced-price meal benefits, or if the household fails to cooperate with follow-up letters or phone calls due to inadequate information, benefits will be reduced or terminated, as appropriate.

(6) The verification process must be completed by December 15, 2000.

School sites are requested to forward any parent questions or information regarding the verification process to the Food Services Department, Revere Center. The contact person is Susan Miranda, certification clerk, (858) 627-7328.

In order to protect the privacy rights of households selected for verification, no information will be made available to those not involved in the verification process.
