Brief Explanation:

During the week of May 7 - 11, 2001, San Diego City Schools will recognize the Day of the Teacher.   At that time, the Board of Education will honor the nominated teacher representative from each site and announce the district’s Teachers of the Year.  San Diego Education Association (SDEA) and the San Diego Unified School District are collaborating in the selection process.

By February 9, 2001, the SDEA representative at each site will hold nominations and conduct a secret ballot to select a teacher to represent the site at the Teacher of the Year ceremony in May 2001.  Only one teacher may be chosen per site.  After the election, the SDEA representative must submit the name of the selected teacher to Melissa Hamilton (see Attachment 1) and provide the attached application (see Attachment 2) to the site teacher nominee.  If interested, the teacher nominee has the option to complete the application process for the district’s Teacher of the Year competition.  Only the teacher selected by his/her school site will be eligible to submit an application for the competition.  The nominated teacher representatives from sites will be recognized at the district’s Teacher of the Year celebration during the week of May 7 - 11, 2001.

Attached are the “General Instructions for the 2001-2002 District Teacher of the Year” competition (see Attachment 3).   Nominees for the district’s Teacher of the Year are required to submit the one-page application (Attachment 2), an essay, and six letters of recommendation.   Finalists will be notified of a timeline for interviews and classroom observations.  From these finalists, three teachers will be chosen as San Diego City Schools Teachers of the Year – one from each of these levels: elementary, middle/junior high, and senior high school.  The three winners will then be eligible to enter the County Teacher of the Year competition.

Completed “District Teacher of the Year” application materials must be forwarded no later than 5 p.m. on February 28, 2001, to Institute Support and Professional Development, Instructional Media Center, Building A, Attention: Melissa Hamilton.

A voluntary informational meeting will be held for interested Teacher of the Year nominees on Tuesday, February 13, 2001, from 4-5 p.m. at the Instructional Media Center, Building G.  Questions regarding the application process should be directed to Melissa Hamilton at mhamilto@mail.sandi.net or (858) 496-1891.
