Brief Explanation:

The Board of Education will recognize significant individual student and team achievements at two special meetings this school year to be held in January and May, 2001. The purpose of this circular is to solicit names of deserving students/teams for recognition at the special board meeting tentatively scheduled for January 16, 2001. (A circular concerning the May recognition will be distributed in March.)

We need your assistance to ensure that all deserving students are honored and that their achievements are publicly celebrated. To submit student/team names, please complete and return the attached form as noted by December 13, 2000. Additional forms may be duplicated at the site. Confirmations will be sent.

CRITERIA FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDENT AWARDS

Awards for individual student achievement, at the minimum, must be countywide or regional, and must be first place or sweepstakes. Examples of student achievement that should be honored:

· Sweepstakes winners at the International History Fair, and Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair.
· First-place winners at the state or international science fair.
· Freedoms Foundation participants.
· Girls’ and Boys’ State participants.
· Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Award recipients.
· National Merit Scholarship and National Achievement Scholarship recipients.

(Note: Other scholarships should be recognized at the school level.)

· Outstanding ROP students.
· County Spelling Bee and Geography Bee winners.
· Other county/regional/state/national awards.

CRITERIA FOR TEAM AWARDS

Awards for team recognition, at the minimum, must be countywide or regional and must be first-place or sweepstakes.

Among the examples of team work that should be recognized:

· Science Olympiad
· Academic League
· Academic Decathlon
· Mock Trial
· CIF in a variety of sports (Note: Presentations to all CIF championship
athletic teams must be coordinated through Barbara Brooks, Educational Services Director, 619-725-7125.)

IMPORTANT: The presentations will be made on January 16, 2001 (tentative), at 4:00 p.m. in the Eugene Brucker Education Center auditorium. Certificates will be awarded as part of the presentation. You will be notified when the board has confirmed this date. It is the school site’s responsibility to inform students, parents and teachers of the date and time of the board presentation.
