Brief Explanation:

  Attachment - Registration Form

Mathematics staff development for Middle School/Jr. High School 6 and 8 will be held:

Saturday, December 9, 2000
8:30 AM – 3:30 PM
Farb Middle School

Registration will be outside auditorium

Due to scheduling issues, these workshops will be offered only this one time.

Any teacher who hopes to or PLANS TO teach intersession during the 2000-2001 school
year should attend the session. This includes special day class teachers.

Teachers will be paid at their current pro rata rate.

The curriculum for Middle School grade 6 will be Bits and Pieces I and II from
Connected Mathematics. The curriculum for grade 6 special day classes will be
Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Decimals and Percents from Jeff Simpson.

The curriculum for Math 8 Intensive (grade 8) will be the Carnegie Learning Cognitive
Tutor (technology based) Algebra Program.
Middle School Sites have a site
license for this program and received the 2000-2001 upgrade on September 1, 2000.

Teachers must bring the Teacher’s Guide of the one grade level they expect to teach to the December 9 training.

Teachers will attend afternoon follow-up and planning sessions during intersession.

A half-day session for administrators will also be held on December 9. Follow-up sessions
for administrators may occur during intersession.

Teachers may earn 1/2 unit (.5) Discover credit. Registration for the course will take place
on the day of the December 9 training. There will be a $25.00 fee and a follow-up
assignment.

There will be a one-hour lunch break during the training. Many fast food establishments are in close proximity to Farb Middle School.

Ample parking will be available at the workshop location.

Teachers are required to send a $10.00 deposit payable to San Diego City Schools with their registration form. The checks will be returned to them the day of the workshop. If a teacher fails to show up to the event, his/her check will be cashed. (This has been necessitated by the high number of "no-shows" we have been experiencing at staff development opportunities.)

Please complete the attached registration form and mail to Sue Gordon, Mathematics Department, Eugene Brucker Education Center, Room 2015, by Monday, November 27, 2000. Do not forget to include a $10.00 deposit.

If you have any questions, please contact Brian Tash, Mathematics Program Manager, (619) 725-7302.
