SCHOOL MEAL INFORMATION

Dear Parent or Guardian at ____________________________________ household:

A change in the law makes it easier for your children to receive free meals at their schools. This law allows the San Diego City Schools to work with the San Diego County Department of Health and Human Services to see which students are from households that receive CalWORKs and/or food stamps and directly certify those students to receive free meals, reducing the paperwork you have to do.

Our records show that your children listed below are eligible to receive school meals at no charge. These children will receive free school meals for the 2000-2001 school year unless you contact their school and say you do not want the children to receive the meals. Separate letters are sent for children attending schools with different start dates for the school year.

STUDENT ID #     STUDENT NAME     LOC#     SCHOOL NAME

If these children bring home an application for free or reduced-price school meals, you do not have to fill it out and return it. If there are other school children in your household who are not listed on this letter, please complete the application and return it to their school as instructed on the meal application form.

You must tell the school when you no longer receive either food stamps or CalWORKs. At that time, you may apply to receive free or reduced-price meals by completing a meal application form you get from the school office. You may apply for benefits at any time during the school year.

We are pleased to offer this new program in order to serve our customers better by reducing paperwork for both parents and the schools. Thank you.
