Brief Explanation:

  Touching the Spirit 2001 Annual Student Awards honoring 4th through 12th grade African American students will be held on Monday, May 14, 2001, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Scottish Rite Center. The awards assembly is designed to celebrate student achievement, community service, and cultural heritage. Schools that have participated in the IAAAAS networking meetings during the past are invited to nominate and bring six African American students, three males and three females, to receive one of the following awards:
 
Males
  Dr. John Griffith Academic Achievement Award
  Dr. Charles Thomas Community Service Award
  Dr. Jack Kimbrough Pride in Cultural Heritage Award
 
 

Females

  Dr. Bertha Pendleton Academic Achievement Award
  Dr. Shirley Weber Community Service Award
  Ms. Shirley Day Williams Pride in Cultural Heritage Award
 

Information about the awards and the criteria for nominating students is attached. Schools are required to pay $30 per student or a total of $180 for six students. There is no charge for adult chaperones and parents. Students must be chaperoned by a parent and/or a school representative. The school is responsible for assuring that every award recipient has transportation to and from this event. A completed registration packet, including Nomination Forms, Payment Form, and the Registration Form, must be received in the Student Advocacy Department no later than 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 27, 2001. Schools submitting the completed registration packet and meeting the requirements stated above will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A school's registration will not be considered complete unless the required forms are completed and payment is enclosed.
