On May 5th, the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center will be recognizing SDUSD’s Rosa Parks Elementary School Cancer Prevention Club at their Celebrity Chefs Cook Gala.
Over a 7 month period, the club raised $6,500 for cancer research - literally 50 cents at a time through bake sales, and by organizing the first ever Rosa Parks Jogathon. The club is comprised of a small group of energetic 4th and 5th graders seeking to make difference in the world. 3rd grade teacher Brenda Taylor provides the guidance. "This year we have raised almost $400.00 with our two bake sales and we have some other events being planned to help us reach our goal. We will be having our Jogathon in June so get those running shoes dusted off and ready!"
Our goal is to raise $10,000 over two years. We are over half way there! That’s a lot of cupcakes! The enthusiasm and dedication of the kids, combined with the desire of the City Heights community to contribute to the fight against cancer has been truly amazing and touching. The cancer club has been a wonderful experience for our entire school community.
