Moving expeditiously, Cindy and I have already met to address a transition plan with the goal of getting her well-oriented to the full range of academic, operational, administrative and leadership matters. We agreed that she will spend the month of March wrapping up her commitments at Central Elementary School and preparing to move to the Central Office on April 1. At the Education Center, Cindy will immerse herself in programs, processes and routines that she will oversee as the Superintendent.
From April through June, Cindy and I will work side-by-side until I retire from the district on June 30. I remain as Superintendent through this period and all superintendent-level decisions will be made by me, but with input and consultation as appropriate from her. Our close collaboration in the near term, especially in the realm of budget development and strategic decision-making, will provide Cindy with a “big picture” understanding of the complexities and interdependencies of district operations.
A top priority for her during the transition is stakeholder engagement. Cindy will be to be out in the community connecting with parents, district employees and the public. This outreach will afford her an opportunity to hear from our stakeholders directly about their recommendations, concerns and ideas for achieving a quality school in every neighborhood. Cindy plans to share her outreach schedule in a weekly email, “Getting Connected”. You can subscribe to this email update at this link: http://www.sandi.net/gettingconnected-signup .
I look forward to helping Cindy prepare for her new role and assisting her in any way on the great work she will lead on behalf of our students as the next Superintendent. As you encounter Cindy on our campuses and around the community, please join me in giving her a warm welcome as she opens the next chapter for San Diego Unified.
