Peanut butter has not been on the menu in San Diego Unified School District for several years, due to concerns over allergies.
The recent national recall of peanut butter has raised questions about the use of peanut butter, which has been absent from local school menus for more than four years.
"The Food Services Department does not serve any peanut butter or peanut products anywhere in our district," said Gary Petill, Food Services Director. "Sunbutter is used in our elementary school items that have traditionally used peanut butter. It's a similar product that is made from specially roasted sunflower seeds, it is completely peanut-free, tree-nut free and gluten-free."
The Sunbutter and Jelly Sandwich on Goldfish Bread is one of the popular meatless entrees on the Wednesday lunch menus at elementary schools.
