In this update from i21 Connect you will find details for getting your Year 1 classroom up and running for the Opening of School plus updates regarding changes to student Active Directory passwords, and new software. 

We have provided the checklist below and an estimated completion time for you to get your i21 classroom up and running for the beginning of the school year:

• Student Netbooks (30 Minutes of Hands on Work - total of 2.5 Hours for Completion over two days)
• Tablet PC (15 Minutes)

Beginning the first week of school, the ITSS Support and Edtech teams will visit each i21 classroom to provide support.  Click here to view the schedule for support (support schedule subject to change based on unforeseen circumstances).  If support is needed prior to the team arriving at your site, please follow the recommended guidelines below:

Consult the i21 Point of Contact list and email the Point of Contact for your school.

Technical Support

1. Consult the Job Aids and Resources and/or Frequently Asked Questions located on the i21 web site.
2. Collaborate with a colleague at your school site.
3. Request assistance from the i21 Point of Contact (POC) for your school site.
4. If the support need is related to installation, please take a look at the "Installation" category in Frequently Asked Questions.  If the question is not answered there, then have your school site principal contact i21classrooms@sandi.net.
5. If i21 equipment is in need of repair, please contact the IT Help Desk at 619-725-7500.
6. For lost or stolen items, please address with the school site principal.

Opening of School

Tablet PC:
Each Year 1 i21 classroom was outfitted with a Tablet PC for the teacher.  The following are some pertinent items related to the start of school:

• When starting up the Tablet PC in the district for the first time after returning to the school site, there will be a variety of software updates that will occur to bring the Tablet software up to date.  These will be installed in the background automatically and may make the Tablet take longer to arrive at the Ctrl + Alt + Delete screen to allow you to login.  One of the new programs that will be installed automatically is called LanSchool.  LanSchool allows the teacher to remotely monitor and manage the student computers from the teacher's Tablet PC.  For more information on this software program, click here.
  
• If you are new to a classroom whose i21 equipment was installed in Year 1 (2009-2010 School Year) then please see the school site staff and/or principal for the Tablet PC that is assigned to this classroom.  Each Tablet PC was checked out to the classroom with the following items (click on the item to see a photo):

• Stylus
  
• Mouse - Each computer has either a wired or Bluetooth (Wireless) Mouse
• External CD/DVD Player with USB Cable
  
• AC Power Adapter
• Laptop Carrying Case
  

Any lost and/or stolen items will NOT be replaced by i21.  Please consult the school site principal to address any missing items.

Student Netbooks:
The following Job Aids and tips will help the classroom teacher get the netbook carts up and running for the first day of school:

• See school site staff and/or principal for combination codes to access the lock on the netbook carts
• See school site staff and/or principal for the key to netbook cart security cable lock.  NOTE:  Netbook carts must be secured to the wall with the security cable lock each day, by the teacher, prior to leaving the school site.  Teachers must also account for each netbook at the end of each class period and end of school day.

Promethean Interactive Whiteboard:

• Locate the Promethean Pen (see photo) and Remote Control (see photo).  They should be located in the media cabinet (see photo) per the end of school classroom checklist.  If no media cabinet installed in the classroom, then media equipment is stored in an existing cabinet.
• The cable connections for the Promethean Interactive Whiteboard should have remained intact with summer cleaning.  If, for some reason, they did not, click here for the Job Aid to reconnect the cables.

Student Active Directory User Names and Passwords:
Based on the experience of students using Active Directory user names and passwords in the 2009 -2010 school year, we have determined that all students should use the more complex form for student passwords in order to ensure student user name and password security.  With this in mind, many of the students passwords in the district have been changed to reflect the new updated standards.  All student user names and passwords are accessible in Zangle by the classroom teacher.  Please see the link to the Job Aid below for instructions on how to access student Active Directory user names and passwords and some troubleshooting tips.

Note:  Students will need to use their Active Directory user name and password to access the following:

• Login to the Netbooks
• Accessing Naviance
• Login to my.sandi.net
  
• Login to Moodle

Troubleshooting Student User Names and Passwords:
The following are some scenarios that have come up regarding student user names and passwords:

1.  Student password is missing when the report is run.
• The student passwords are update once per hour once the student account has been made active in Zangle.  Please wait one hour and rerun the report again.  If the student password is still not there, then please call the help desk at 619-725-7500.  Please be ready to provide the following information when calling the help desk:  Student first name, last name, and student ID number.
2. Student user names and passwords are blank on the report.
• Please check with the Zangle Power User at your site and make sure that you are the teacher of record for your course (i.e. the main teacher who assigns grades and such).  If assigned as other than the teacher of record, the reports will be blank.  If you team teach or job share, one teacher may be listed as the teacher of record and this teacher would have to generate the reports.
  
• Once you have been made the teacher of record or have ascertained your status with regard to the course, then try printing the reports again.  If the reports are still blank, please call the help desk at 619-725-7500.

LanSchool:
LanSchool is a new software program being added to the i21 classroom this year.   The function of the software is for remote monitoring and management of student netbooks from the teachers' Tablet PC.  Some of the most useful features include being able to see all of the student's netbook screens (see photo) right from the Tablet PC and the ability to lock student computers when full student attention is required.  The following addresses the installation and setup of LanSchool:

• Step 1:  LanSchool will be installed automatically on the teacher's Tablet PC the first time they login upon returning to the district. (There is no installation required on the student netbooks as the software was already installed.)
