Overview
As a result of the recent national news stories about school safety, we want to assure you that the security and well-being of our students and staff are of utmost importance in the San Diego Unified School District. Staff and students practice and train regularly for a variety of simulated crisis situations. Our district works with the city and county and law enforcement organizations to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergency situations.

Parents, students and the community we serve are also important and valued partners in school safety, by helping watch for suspicious activity and issues of concern and reporting them promptly. Please report any concerns to your school administrator. Reports can also be made anonymously to Campus Crimestoppers at (888) 580-TIPS. We want to hear from you if you have concerns about:
  • Drugs
  • Weapons
  • Fights
  • Vandalism
  • Gang Activity
The consequences for student involved in these activities are severe, and can include expulsion and prosecution.

In addition to prompt and appropriate reports of concerns and rumors, we also encourage families to monitor students’ Internet use, and to remind students that information posted on social networking sites is public. It can be a cause for concern and may have legal consequences.

In order to provide safe and secure schools, the following measures are in place:
  • Each school's staff reviews and updates an individual Safe School Plan, a state-mandated emergency response plan.
  • Staff and students participate in regular emergency preparedness and response training. This includes annual drills to practice for fires, lockdowns and earthquakes.
  • Substance abuse prevention programs are presented to students regularly.
  • Schools have school safety posters Adobe PDF in each classroom, and Campus Crimestoppers signs Adobe PDF in visible locations on campuses.
  • School-based police officers train regularly to respond effectively to any situation.
  • Working closely with city and county agencies, school police officers prepare, conduct and debrief after emergency response exercises. These include full-scale exercises and shelter-in-place practices.
Recently, revisions were made to the district’s Emergency Operations Plan and Site Emergency Plan template. Emergency Response manuals were updated and distributed with new disaster kits to all district sites. A new Hazard Mitigation Plan is in place, and Hazard Site Assessments have been conducted at all schools and facilities.
