Future Thurgood Marshall Middle

Future Thurgood Marshall Middle School (a.k.a. Undesignated School A, Scripps Ranch Area)
School opens: September 2007
Principal: Rick Novak
Status: Construction began in Fall 2005.
Location: 9700 Avenue of Nations, San Diego, CA 92131. Scripps Ranch. The site is on the western edge of Alliant International University, off Pomerado Road where I-15 meets Pomerado Road (a.k.a. Alternative Site B).
Purpose: The Future Thurgood Middle School will enroll all students in grades 6-8 in Scripps Ranch. The current Thurgood Marshall Middle School will revert to an elementary school to accommodate the students from Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary School, which was built as a temporary school.
New school size: The new school will accommodate 1,600 students in grades 6-8 on 36.5 acres.
Acquisition and relocation: The new school required the acquisition of a portion of a non-residential parcel of land from a local university.
Name of new school: The school will retain the name of the current Thurgood Marshall Middle School, which is named for a well-known figure in civil rights history and the first African-American Supreme Court Justice.
Campus features: Three 3-story classroom buildings, 162,000 square feet of facilities, 36.5 gross acres/26 net acres, 215 parking spaces, 90+ trees, joint-use fields for soccer and baseball, tennis and multipurpose courts, multipurpose building, library/media center, lunch shelter, elevator and accessibility features, kitchen, faculty lounge, workroom, administrative center, P.E. building, performing arts theater, and energy-efficient design features.

•  Draft Environmental Impact Report: November 16, 2001
•  Board of Education approves site: April 9, 2002
•  Contract awarded: January 27, 2004
•  Groundbreaking ceremony: November 16, 2005
•  First day of school: September 2007
