The site is bound by Myrtle Avenue on the north, 43rd
Street on the east, Thorn Street on the south, the alley between
VanDyke
Avenue and 42nd Street on the west, and excludes the southeastern
corner located to the east of the alley between 43rd Street and VanDyke. |

Purpose:
Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary will ease overcrowding at
Edison Elementary, Hamilton Elementary and Rosa Parks Elementary. It
will also eliminate student overflow at Bayview Terrace Elementary and
a kindergarten overflow annex at Hoover High School.

New school size:
The new school will accommodate 700 students in grades K-5 on 6.3 acres.

Acquisition
and relocation: The
new school required the acquisition of 34 parcels, and the relocation
of 129
households consisting of 602 residents. Of the 129 households, 16 used
their
relocation funds to become first-time homeowners. |

Name of new
school: The school is named for the Olympic track star who
advocated for urban youth.

features: 32 classrooms, 55,666
square feet of facilities,
6.3 acres, 79 parking spaces, 105 trees and 1,983 shrubs, vines and
groundcovers, joint-use field for soccer and baseball, multipurpose
room,
library/media center, lunch shelter, elevator and accessibility
features,
kitchen, faculty lounge, administrative center, and energy-efficient
design
features. The
buildings’ steel columns and roof lines express the spirit
of Florence
Griffith Joyner, the athlete, in their dynamic swiftness and strength.
