About the Eighth Area
Elementary School: A new school was originally to be built in
the Sherman Heights community. However, on
May 25, 2004, the Board of Education approved that the Eighth Area
Elementary
School (a.k.a. Sherman Area Elementary)
will not be built due to declining enrollment.
The
original budget of $30 million will be placed in a reserve account to
be
allocated toward future priority needs within Proposition MM. The funds
can only be allocated upon recommendation of staff and the Independent
Citizens’ Oversight Committee and final approval by the Board of
Education.
These future needs could include the new Memorial Area Middle School
(originally
budgeted as an elementary school), additional funding requirements
resulting
from the continued escalation of land costs, construction costs and raw
material costs, etc. Read the Letter
of Recommendation from the Independent Citizens' Oversight Committee. |

About
Sherman Elementary School: On April 27, 2004, the Board approved
the demolition and rebuilding
of the existing Sherman Elementary using $18 million of state facility
funds and $3 million of Proposition MM modernization dollars. Thus,
Sherman
Heights will still receive a high-quality, new facility. While under
construction,
Sherman Elementary will close in Fall 2006 and will reopen in Fall
2008. During demolition, Sherman Elementary students will likely attend
Golden Hill Elementary and Kimbrough Elementary.
