Attention 8th Grade Parents
In January, Marci Blodgett, our
head counselor, will be talking with 8th grade parents about
California’s high school graduation requirements, scheduling and
enrollment for Patrick Henry High, and the 8th grade Retention/Promotion
Guidelines set forth by the San Diego Unified School District. This is
a very informative meeting that will help your child in the transition
from middle school to high school. Mrs. Blodgett will be presenting this
information twice. The dates are January 17 and 24, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. in
the school auditorium. A reservation form for this event was sent home
with the 8th grade first quarter report cards. Please complete that form
and return it to Mrs. Gunnerson, Pershing’s counseling secretary, or
your child’s first period teacher. The reservation form is also
available online at http://sandi.net/pershing/counseling.htm

Winter Concert - On December
13th, Mr. Anderson and his incredibly talented young musicians entertained
a packed auditorium filled with family, friends, faculty, staff, and
community members. The band program has grown immensely under the
direction of Mr. Anderson. The Pershing program now includes a 6th
Grade Orchestra, 6th Grade Concert Band, 7th and 8th Grade Concert Band,
7th Grade Symphonic Band, and 8th Grade Wind Ensemble. Thank you to all
who made this spectacular evening possible!
The Pershing community helping others
- Thank you to all of our students and families who raised over $1,000
for the Poway district fire victims! Your generosity will enrich the lives
of those who have lost so much in recent months.
Pershing’s 2nd Annual Marine Corps
Reserve Toys for Tots Donation Drive will continue through Wednesday,
December 19th. Please bring any donated toys (new unwrapped toys only)
to Mrs. Robe (Room 703). Thank you for your support!
Congratulations to the Pershing drama
students who auditioned and were cast in roles in the upcoming Patrick
Henry High musical production. This opportunity is the result of an
exciting new partnership between the Henry High and Pershing Drama
Departments. Several Pershing graduates (now Henry students) have also
been cast in this production. Performances will be at the end of February.
There is still time to purchase gifts
in the Pershing Student Store! Pencils, pens, bookmarks, fuzzy change

Every year, 5th, 7th,
and 9th grade public school students take the California Physical
Fitness Test and are scored in six different areas. Recently,
the results of the 2006 - 2007 tests were announced and we are
excited to report that Pershing students scored well above the
district and state average. Thank you to Mr. Alfstad, Mrs. Hunrichs,
Mr. Kurtz, Mr. Paxton, Ms. Shipherd and our students for your hard
work and dedication! |
Congratulations
to
Our Awesome PE Department!!

An update from Mrs. Rondestvedt -
The 6th grade English teams are working on a nonfiction unit that
includes a research paper. 6th grade students should have topics
picked out prior to leaving on Winter Vacation. These topics need
to be centered around an issue (environmental, social, or endangered
animal) or an issue that students are interested in that is relevant to
our world, country, city, state, community, or school. We will do
preliminary research on the topics prior to vacation and follow up with
more research and writing after vacation with papers being due
approximately Jan. 21st.
Attention Team 6A Families –
Team 6A (Mr. Akashian, Mrs. Madonia, and Mrs. Rondestvedt) would greatly
appreciate any donations of soft tissues, and scotch tape. Thank you!
Mrs. Wheeler’s (Team 7A – 7th
grade Algebra and Pre-Algebra) class homework assignments are now on
ParentConnect. If your child is absent, this is a terrific way to
find out about any missed work. The assignments stay online for about 2
weeks and Mrs. Wheeler tries to post them at the beginning of each week.
For a link to ParentConnect, please go to http://www.sandi.net/pershing/parentconnect.htm.
Many teachers are using this invaluable resource. If you need a reminder
of your ParentConnect/Zangle ID or password, please contact Stephanie
Kamp at skamp@sandi.net.
Congratulations to If
Rotation = 1 for their recent success at the Southern California

Patrick Henry (one of whom is a Pershing graduate), one from High Tech
Middle, and one from Benchley-Weinberger. This team finished fifth in
the table competition and won the Creative Presentation Award. At the
Preuss High School tournament in November, they won the Research
Presentation Award and came in third in the table competition. If

SDSU's
"Girls and Women in Sports"

|
Recently,
SDSU hosted a "Girls and Women in Sports" event at Cox
Arena. Students
from throughout the county participated in this program.
Many thank you's to Mrs. Hunrichs
(Pershing PE Department) for supplying us with the
following detailed report of the day’s activities! |
"December 2, 2007 was the
inaugural Girls and Women's Sports event at SDSU. P.E. teachers from
various schools were asked to be "ambassadors" to promote this
event to their students and their school community. The event was
designed to expose young girls to collegiate athletes and to celebrate
women in sports. The event was held prior to the SDSU women's
basketball game vs. Fullerton. Just about every women's varsity
team was represented at this event. As the students arrived, they were
given autograph books and check off sheets. The teams had a
variety of activities set up in which the students could participate.
There was golfing instruction, volleyball bumping and passing, a
miniature track, rowing, a softball game, shots on a water polo goal and
much more. The athletes were so welcoming and engaging to the girls. You
could see that they were having as much fun as the students. They have a
passion for the games they play and it really showed. They were
tremendous hosts to our students. And our students!!! The smiles were
enormous. To meet these players and to receive positive feedback from
them was great. Jim Esterbrooks from the County Office of Education (and
a Pershing parent) was one of the people responsible for this awesome
event!
Not only was
it important to foster the athletic dreams of young girls and
women but also to offer an opportunity for these students to get onto a
college campus. I would also like to emphasize that this event was
held not only for girls, but for boys as well. There
was an equal number of male students there as female. It was nice
to see the young boys appreciating the women athletes of our community.
I would like to include a quote
from Beth Burns, the coach of the women Aztecs. "Both the SDCOE and
our Aztec family agreed to not only make this event bigger and better
next year, but to continue to have additional events throughout the
remainder of this current season."
I will pass onto the Pershing
Family any news I receive about upcoming events.
The SDSU Women's Basketball Team
takes on the UCONN Huskies on
Friday Dec. 21st at 8:00 p.m. The Huskies are the only
women's basketball team to have won 5 National Championships
titles in a 10 year span. This is a wonderful chance to see
two good teams in action, and of course remember your Red and Black!!"
