From the Desk of Mrs. Sullivan

Dear Pershing Families,

We hope very much that this letter finds you and your loved ones safe.

As the firestorm ends, we are making plans for the safe return of our students and staff to a normal school schedule. Conditions permitting, we will resume our regular schedule, including our Six to Six schedule, on Tuesday, October 30. Our custodial staff began cleaning Pershing on Thursday. They used the guidelines issued by the County of San Diego and our indoor environment is now clean and ready for children.

Every day you entrust us with the safety of your children. Our staff takes this responsibility very seriously. We have a school safety plan, which is prepared under the supervision of our district police department. Throughout the year, we train our staff and students so we are prepared to guard the safety of our children. I want to let you know about two safeguards related to the firestorm that are in place here at Pershing.

We monitor air quality on an ongoing basis. Playground and physical education activities are limited or modified when air quality exceeds the recommendations of our county air board (http://www.sdapcd.org/index.html). We maintain a list of children with health needs, including asthma, and teachers are alert to signs of breathing difficulties. Parents are contacted when we believe that children may need medical attention.

Additionally, we understand that following events such as the firestorm, some children may experience heightened anxiety or stress.  Our teachers watch for signs of emotional or behavioral reactions. Students are welcomed to talk to our counselor, Mrs. Blodgett.  Mrs. Blodgett will in turn contact parents if she believes your child needs additional support.

Getting back into routine often helps people recover from disasters such as the firestorm. Our goal is to reestablish all our school routines as quickly as possible. Not only will we move swiftly to resume work in our academic classes, we will also resume our lunch and school spirit activities. We believe it is important that school be a place of fun for children, as well as a place of work.

Thank you for sending us your children, we promise to take good care of them.

Sincerely,

Sarah Sullivan
Principal

Air Quality and PE Classes

Dear Pershing Families,

The Physical Education Department would like to share with you a link to the
San Diego Air Quality Reports that has been recommended by the San Diego
County Office of Education. We would like to assure you that we are
concerned for the health and safety of your child as they return to school.
We will gradually increase the activity level in our classes as the air
quality improves.  In the coming weeks, we will be using air quality
information to guide our decisions about the activity level of the P.E.
program.

Sincerely,

The Physical Education Department

From Ms. Spicer - A big thank you to all who made purchases at the Book Fair. Our library fundraiser grossed over $2000. The library gets $542 in cash and $125 in books. The new books from the fair are already in circulation. We also have a new set of reference books, How It Works: Science and Technology, ready for students researching science projects. Thanks again for your support!

Open House Wrap-up - Pershing was buzzing with activity at this year's Open House and Dinner on October 11, 2007. Students and their families were treated to a festive time filled with lots of community spirit. In the cafeteria, everyone enjoyed a wonderful dinner while in the courtyard and lunch arbor, many of our school and parent groups hosted tables that provided information about some of our academic and extracurricular activities. The highlight of this celebratory evening was the classroom visitations where parents and students learned more about the curriculum and expectations for this school year. Thank you to the administration, faculty, staff, parent volunteers, and all those who attended this grand event.

WOW!!!! The 2007 Shadow Your Student Day, held on October 12th, was an awesome experience for the Pershing campus. Over 300 parents shared the school day with their children. Thank you so much for supporting the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty, staff, and administration!

Drama Boosters Needed! Our Drama Club needs volunteers for production help and also for supervision during rehearsals and performances. This is a terrific opportunity for parents, grandparents, etc. to support our dramatic arts program. For more information, please call or email Mrs. Miller.

Thank you to our volunteers, parents, students, staff, faculty, and administration for
all you do!

Pershing ROCKS!!!!

Thank you to all our parent volunteers who made October such a terrific month for Pershing! By volunteering at the Open House, PALS, Band, and other activities, you not only strengthened our programs and supported our faculty and staff, but you also brought a strong community spirit to campus. Extra big thank you’s to those who helped make the Open House so successful: Mrs. Esterbrooks for coordinating the dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Masi and Mrs. Freeland for their Band Booster work, Mrs. Nelson for the “Backpack Awareness” table and information, Mrs. Spence for her dedication to the Science Fair, Mrs. Kyne, Mrs. Hansell, Mr. Ledford, and Mrs. Pomaskin for their outstanding Foundation display table, Mrs. Esten for her guidance, the many other Pershing parent volunteers for their time, talent, and support, and the entire staff at Pershing!

We send a very special thank you to Mrs. Zito who is Pershing’s parent coordinator in charge of the parent e-mail database. Many years ago, she created our parent email directory as a way to keep in contact with families.  Our email blasts, e-newsletters, and other email news are delivered to you because of her hard work. During the San Diego County fires, she worked overtime making sure that all our families received important school-related information. We thank her for bringing such valuable and newsworthy updates to our community.

Pershing Boosters – Due to the fires, our October meeting was cancelled.  Our next meeting will be on November 28, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. Everyone is invited!!!!!!!!!! If you have any Booster or volunteer questions, please email us.
