Congratulations to the ten Pershing students who participated at the 57th Annual California State Science Fair in Los Angeles on May 19-20, 2008. We are very proud of the amazing hard work and accomplishments of these
students! This year’s state science fair showcased approximately 1,000 middle and high school science fair projects from throughout California. Not only is it difficult to earn an invitation to compete at the CA State Science Fair but it is also incredibly difficult to win an award. Only one first, second, third and fourth place award is presented in each category per division and very few honorable mentions are awarded. This year, Pershing students brought home three honors from the CA State Science Fair. Two students earned “Honorable Mention’s” in Mammalian Biology and Microbiology and a third student (the Junior Sweepstakes winner at the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair) received a 4th Place Award in the Pharmacology/Toxicology category. Congratulations!!!!
From Pershing’s Head Counselor, Ms. Blodgett –
Students have received their scheduling cards to sign up for next year’s elective choices. If a student is in Band or Spanish 1-2 this year, we plan on them continuing to the next level. The cards should be returned as soon as possible to the student’s elective or wheel teacher. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Blodgett by email at
ablodgett@sandi.net or call her at (619) 465-3234 ext. 2223.
Congratulations to several of Mrs. Rondestvedt’s 6th graders who were winners in the recent Balboa Park essay contest, which was also Pershing’s April Prompt of the Month. Mrs. Rondestvedt and her students will be attending the essay contest’s awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.
| The San Diego Unified School District has announced that Pershing Middle School's bell schedule for 2008-2009 will not change. Our school hours will remain the same. School will start at 7:25 a.m. and end at 2:10 p.m. |

Last week, visitors from SPAWAR spent Thursday with Pershing’s 8th grade science classes to work with our students on a new project. They will be returning this week to continue their work. We will be posting pictures of the SPAWAR visit on the school website in the next few days.
Keep current on local and national educational news and information by reading the San Diego Unified School District’s Weekly Update. Included in each update is a message from Superintendent Terry B. Grier, Ed.D. To access this week’s update,

iVIE Awards Update: In 7th grade science, two student-generated videos were nominated for an award at the annual iVIE Competition this year. iVIE stands for "Innovative Video in Education" and its purpose is to recognize efforts in using video in the classroom. The two videos nominated were
Dr. Mc Awesome and Integumentary Puppets. On May 20, 2008, at an Academy-Awards style show,
Dr. McAwesome won a Special Recognition award. We wish to congratulate the students who created these videos. We are so proud of all your hard work, teamwork and creativity!
Congratulations to the Pershing 8th grader who was recently named one of the grand prize winners in the Friends of the Library Essay Contest. The city winners and grand prize winners were honored at the Friends of the Library Essay Contest's 11th Annual Awards Ceremony on May 1, 2008 at the Balboa Park Club. Pershing’s librarian, Ms. Spicer, had this to say about our 8th grade winner,
“It was a well deserved honor…Her essay showed a comprehensive reading of
Iqbal and a true understanding of how one person can make a difference.”
