An Important Message to Parents
From Vice Principal Hillier

"The Great Distracter"

Parents, please check your students’ cell phones for use during the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. As you know, California law allows students to carry cell phones at school but they must be turned completely off during school hours. Student phone usage during school hours is becoming a great distracter to your child's education. Teachers are having to stop class more and more often to deal with text messaging and vibrating or ringing phones during instructional time. Students using cell phones to text message is becoming a clear danger to their and others educational experiences. Misuse of cell phones is taking valuable time away from the academic focus for all of us at Pershing.

Parents, a cell phone is a wonderful tool, but as with all tools it can become dangerous if the child using it is not mature enough to accept the responsibility that comes with the privilege of using it. Please take time to check your child’s cell phone use. If your child is using the phone during school hours we urge you to take the phone away until they are old enough to handle it in a responsible manner.

Students caught using or having a cell phone on during school hours will have the phone confiscated. In the past, we have given the phone back to the student with a note or phone call from the parent. This has not been an effective tool in curbing the usage of cell phones at Pershing. We regret that if the students do not voluntarily stop the unauthorized usage of phones during school hours it may become necessary for parents to come pick up the phones in person. Please help us keep our students focused on learning so they may be ready for the challenges that lay ahead.

Thank you for your support,

Scott Hillier
Vice Principal

Parent Involvement Opportunities

Pershing Parent Power!

From Pershing’s Drama Club:

  • Mrs. Miller and the cast of the Spring Musical Production need parent help, especially during dress rehearsals and performance week. If you have an hour or more to spare, please contact Mrs. Miller.

  • Donation Requests for the Performances - Tons of newspaper is needed.  When you are finished with your newspapers, please recycle them to the Drama Department.  The production is also in need of an old-fashioned camera on a tripod and some kind of printing press.  Neither has to work.

Pershing Band Request - Mr. Anderson needs volunteer support in the following areas for the Pershing Band’s Spring Concert and Fundraising Dinner, which will be held on May 22, 2008 starting at 5:30 p.m.

  • Help serve dinner.

  • Set up the cafeteria.

  • Clean up the cafeteria.

  • Take pictures.

  • Supervise the band room and hallway areas.

For specific times, details, and/or to sign-up for a volunteer duty, please contact Mr. Anderson at manderson2@sandi.net or call him at (619) 465-3234.

Attention Incoming 6th Grade Families and Returning Families! Join other Pershing parents at our parent involvement meeting on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. in the school library. At this meeting, we will plan our back-to-school activities and fall events for the 2008-2009 school year, as well as discuss how to stay involved during the middle school years. Now more than ever, parents are needed to help support and strengthen our school. Please bring a friend! Your input is important to us!

The Pershing Middle School Foundation's 2008-2009 Fundraising Campaign Report - We are now more than 25% toward our goal.
