Fair Success!
|
Once again, Pershing Middle School
students shined at the recent Greater San Diego Science and
Engineering Fair (GSDSEF). It is very difficult to earn a spot at the
GSDSEF and over 100 Pershing students were chosen to participate,
which is an amazing accomplishment since there are only about
830 middle and high school students who earn the honor to compete at
this event. The GSDSEF Awards Ceremony was held at San Diego State’s
Cox Arena and Pershing students accepted nearly 100 first, second,
third, and fourth place honors as well as several Professional Society
Awards and Special Awards. Congratulations to our students, faculty,
staff, administrators, parents, and our entire school community who
together make the Pershing Science Fair program such a grand success! |

Science Fair Excitement!
Six Pershing students have been selected to compete at the 57th
Annual California State Science Fair (May 19-20, 2008). Two students
were named as alternates. Only 1,000 middle and high school students
from the entire state are invited to compete at this prestigious
competition. Congratulations!
WOW!
Congratulations to the Pershing 8th grader who was named as one of the four GSDSEF
Junior (Middle School) Sweepstakes winners. She was the only San
Diego Unified School District student to earn this honor!!!!
Fun
Community Event! The Patrick Henry High School
Instrumental Music Benefit Auction & Concert will be held in
the Patrick Henry auditorium from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 11,
2008. Admission is $10 per person and will include live performances,

Ms.
Millward's classes (Team 8B – Humanities) will be enjoying their much
anticipated 'Poetry Cafe' in early May.
Eighth grade students are required to learn advanced forms of poetry and
it is incredibly inspiring to see them recite these poems. Ms.
Millward’s ‘Poetry Cafes’ are always a favorite event for her
students. More information will follow.

News from
6th Grade, Team C (Ms. Ochs, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Decker-Wells) –
It’s hard to believe that we
are ¾ of the way through the school year. Between science experiments,
writing poetry, calculating the surface area and volume of various
figures, and the rest of our activities, we’re sailing through the
year! But we still have a ways to go.
We’ve noticed that students are starting to run out of materials they
are required to have (remember all those lists at the beginning of the
year?)
Parents, please check with
your child to see if there are specific materials they are in need of
(notebooks, glue sticks, pencils, colored pencils,
calculators, etc.) It
will make getting to the end of the school year “smooth
sailing”.
Friends
of the Library Contest
– Congratulations to the Pershing 8th grader who was honored
as the 8th grade finalist in the San Carlos Branch Library’s Friends
of the Library Contest. She was also named as a city finalist. The
citywide awards’ celebration
for this literary annual event will be on May 1st at the Balboa
Park Club.

GATE Meeting
|
Parents
are invited to the GATE District Advisory Committee meeting on April 14th
from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Ballard Center, 2375 Congress Street.
The evening’s guest speaker is Dr. Terry Grier, Superintendent of
the San Diego Unified School District. All are invited to attend.
Translation will be available. |
From
the Pershing Library –
“Like Baseball? Want a
chance to win a trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and other
prizes? ‘Step Up to the Plate @ your library’ is the contest for
you. You will need to answer four questions about baseball before you
can submit your entry form. Come to the library for details about the
contest and entry forms."
Congratulations
to the student editors and faculty advisor of Pershing's Creative Arts
Magazine, "Expressions." The
publication recently received a 2007
Ranking of Excellent by the National Council of Teachers of English.
The only other San Diego County school publication to receive an
“Excellent” ranking was from the Francis Parker School.
The
Pershing Middle School Band performed to a "standing room
only" crowd during their participation in the Patrick Henry
Secondary Band Cluster Concert on Friday, April 4.
The Lewis Middle School Band and the Patrick Henry Symphonic Winds
Band also performed. The evening began with the 8th graders
performing "Ashland Park" followed by "Suspended
Animation". The 7th graders performed "Adventure on
Snake River" and "March Slav". The concert concluded with
all three schools performing together for the first time ever. After the
concert the students enjoyed an ice cream social and mingled with the
Patrick Henry Band students. Many of the Pershing students will be
joining the Patrick Henry Band next year and you could see the
excitement on their faces as they listened to the music and when they
chatted with the high school students afterward. Mr. Anderson
continues to encourage and mentor these students and they improve with
every performance. He has been such a gift to the Pershing Music
Program. The students are looking forward to their upcoming Spring
concert and the Knott's Berry Farm trip. Thank you to Mrs. Masi for the
update!

"In 7th grade science classes, student teams created videos
about one organ system in the human body. Eleven of these teams'
videos were submitted to the iVIE competition. The iVIE
competition is a program that recognizes student and teacher produced
videos. Our student videos were entered in the 6-8th grade math/science
category. All submitted videos will be shown at a Film Festival on
May 10th and videos in each category will be nominated to receive an
award. The awards will be announced at an Academy Awards-style
ceremony on May 20th. The locations and times of these two events
are to be announced, so we will keep you informed. We are all very proud of the hard work of all of our students and wish
our competing teams good luck!" |
