Meeting Announcement

Please note that the Parent Booster meeting has been rescheduled from March 26th to March 27th.

With the recent focus on budgets, our upcoming Parent Booster meeting on Thursday, March 27th will concentrate on the important issues that are facing our schools. Please join Principal Sullivan and other parents as we discuss on a new level, the ways that Pershing parents can help maintain, support and strengthen our programs in 2008-2009. If you have never attended a Parent Booster meeting, this is a tremendous opportunity to get plugged into Pershing. Your input and energy are needed. The meeting will be held in the library on Thursday, March 27th at 6:30 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact the Parent Booster Coordinator, Scott, at (619) 698-7125. Everyone is invited. We look forward to seeing you all.

Pasta for Pennies From Mr. Myrick: “The Pershing Community Rocks. As unbelievable as it sounds the students and staff of Pershing Middle School donated over $2,100.00 to Pasta for Pennies. Yes, you heard that correctly, all of the pennies, nickels, dimes, etc. that were donated by you over the past three weeks added up to over $2,100.00. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! The honor of being the class that donated the most goes to Mrs. Rondestvedt's Block 1 class. They donated over $400.00. Mrs. Marcarelli's Block 1 class collected the second highest with over $200.00. This was followed by Ms. Madonia's, Ms. Millward's, and Ms. Carroll's Block 1 classes. Congratulations to all of you on a fantastic job.”

The California Youth in Theatre Day, on March 25, 2008, is a celebration of theatre arts in California. Pershing is honored to receive a scholarship to attend this event. Three of our drama students will accompany Mrs. Miller to the state capital in Sacramento to meet legislators and perform selected pieces. Congratulations!

Volunteer Opportunity: Attention parents, grandparents, and community members! Patrick Henry High needs panelists for the upcoming Senior Exhibitions, which will be held on April 24, 2008 from 11:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. To volunteer, please contact Yvonne Walden at ywalden@sandi.net

Welcome 5th Grade Families! Pershing will be conducting two tours in March. The first one is on March 12th and the second will occur on March 26th. The tours begin at 8:00 a.m. in front of the school office. Please sign in at the office counter prior to taking the tour.

The San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee was on March 11, 2008! 7th and 8th grade students from throughout the county competed. The winner will now represent San Diego County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in late May. Congratulations to 7th grader Matt H. who represented Pershing!

Congratulations to all our students who were cast in the 6 to 6 program and Drama Club’s upcoming spring musical production. Rehearsals began on Tuesday, March 11th. All rehearsals will be held in the auditorium unless otherwise indicated by Mrs. Miller. Rehearsals will end at 3:30 p.m.

Ms. Wheeler’s (Math, Team 7A) homework is posted each week on ParentConnect. Please note, in order to see her latest assignments, when you log onto ParentConnect and access your child's account information for Mrs. Wheeler, click on “Class News” not “Assignments.”

Band News: The Pershing Band Boosters sent us this update about the SDUSD Lewis Band Festival on March 7 & 8, 2008, “The Band Festival was awesome!!!  Each grade performs before a panel of judges and then afterward one of the judges does a clinic with the group. The 7th and 8th grade bands both received an "excellent" rating.  The judge who worked with the 8th graders said, "I've never seen a more improved band in the 16 years I've been judging the San Diego City Schools Middle School Music Festival.”  The judge who worked with the 7th graders shared with us, "You have a very big sound unlike most other 7th grade bands."  These were terrific compliments. The 6th graders also performed wonderfully, especially being their first time ever in a competition.”  We send huge congratulations to Mr. Mark Anderson, the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands and their families, and the entire Masi family for their hard work and dedication to the Pershing Music program!

Mrs. Madonia’s class (Team 6A/Mathematics) would appreciate any donations of Clorox Wipes and Kleenex. Thank you!

Congratulations to Pershing's four drama students who recently performed in Henry High's production of "Fiddler on the Roof"! These students put in many, many hours of after school rehearsals at Patrick Henry High. Also in the production were several Pershing alumni. Thank you to Pershing and Henry High for making this collaboration possible!
