A letter to Pershing families from Principal Sullivan…

Dear Parents/Guardians:

I am pleased to report a change in our 2006-07 Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status - Pershing made AYP for 2006-07! This change occurred because the district submitted corrections to the testing data that the California Department of Education (CDE) uses to calculate AYP. After using the corrected data to recalculate AYP, the CDE notified us that we met all 24 of our school's goals!

This accomplishment is due to the hard work of our students, staff, and parents who have dedicated themselves to improving achievement at our school. As a result, Pershing remains in Year 2 of Program Improvement rather than advancing to Year 3, and with continued hard work this year, we hope to exit Program Improvement in the fall.

Your support of your child's achievement is critical to our continued success. I encourage you to ensure that your child attends school every day and homework is completed on a regular basis. Do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher if you feel that he or she is in need of additional academic assistance. I trust that continued strong effort by students, parents, and the school staff will result in increased student achievement.

Sincerely,

Sarah Sullivan
Principal

Patrick Henry News from the Pershing Counseling Department: Counselors and teachers from Henry will be here on Friday, February 29th to meet with 8th graders and talk to them about high school classes. The students will receive a Program Request Form (scheduling card) and the Inquire, which is the course catalog. Ms. Blodgett will be conducting follow up meetings with all 8th graders during their English classes the week of March 3.  She will answer questions and review how to complete the scheduling cards so that the best information is included to help the Henry staff schedule students for next year. Welcome to Pershing! Thank you to all the families who attended the 5th Grade Parent Orientation on February 27th.  We enjoyed meeting you and look forward to seeing you at our upcoming tours and the May 2nd Mixer.

Once again, over 100 Pershing students have been chosen by the GSDSEF regional screening judges to compete at the 2008 Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair. This amount represents approximately one third of our 8th grade class. Several of our 7th grade students were also among those selected. These students participated in our 7th Grade After School Science Fair Club and worked very hard in their after school hours to prepare for this prestigious academic event.

Pershing Students Shine in Regional Competition!
