Fair Fever - Catch It!!
Science
Fair season is an exciting time on the Pershing campus. Our science
classes are filled with experiments, display boards, notebooks, surveys
and very busy students and teachers all working hard to make this the best
Science Fair season ever.
Each
grade’s Science Fair project is a stepping stone to the next level. In
6th grade, our students are given a smaller project in order to give them
a glimpse of what is needed to complete a successful project. 7th graders
tackle a more extensive Science Fair curriculum that mirrors most of the
requirements for the 8th grade projects. When their projects are complete,
the 7th grade students present their findings in front of a teacher and
their peers in a classroom setting. In 8th grade, our students take their
scientific minds and their projects to a new level of responsibility by
presenting their findings in front of a panel of students, parents,
educators, and district and community leaders.
After
our 7th and 8th grade students choose their Science Fair topic, they
research, evaluate, hypothesize, and compile scientific data through surveys, experiments, graphs, tables,
etc. It is a very extensive project and requires an enormous amount of
dedication and focus. Through this structured opportunity, children learn
that they are capable of a higher level of rigorous thinking and work. The
Science Fair is an opportunity to find oneself as a student, to identify
as a critical thinker and to see oneself as having a scientific and
engineering mind.
