Notes from the Orchestra!

HELP!  We need strings!  We need replacement strings for 3/4, 4/4 (full size) Violins and Cellos, Available at Alan's Music or online. www.southweststrings.com or www.wwbw.com

The drastic changes in humidity and heat wreak havoc on our string instruments.  Pegs get loose, strings pop, we need to keep our instruments in GOOD HEALTH!  Check your student's instrument and make sure all of their strings are in good playing condition.  No nicks or unraveling of the wire.

Concert and Fundraising Dinner
May 22, 2008

This evening was perfect! The festivities began with the fundraising dinner, which provided great food and excellent entertainment to an appreciative Pershing Community. An outstanding concert following in the "standing room only" auditorium. Congratulations to all involved in the music program for such a rewarding and successful year! Click here to read more.

Knott's Berry Farm Concert in the Park Program

The students went on their first ever out of town band trip on May 10, 2008.  They performed two selections entitled "Midnight Escape" and Korean Folksong "Ahrirang".  Following the performance, they toured the amusement park sampling the food, rides and shows.  At 5 p.m., they attended the Awards Ceremony. Pershing received an "Excellent" rating and a 4th place trophy.  Following the ceremony, they had more time to explore the park with their friends. The students represented Pershing in a way that would make Mrs. Sullivan proud!!*

May Mixer
May 2, 2008

Mr. Anderson and members of the Pershing Band provided an awesome musical accompaniment at the Pershing Annual May Mixer. The band played several selections while our Mixer guests ate and socialized. It was a wonderful evening for all!

Patrick Henry Secondary Band
Cluster Concert

The Pershing Middle School Band performed to a "standing room only" crowd during their participation in the Patrick Henry Secondary Band Cluster Concert on Friday, April 4, 2008. The Lewis Middle School Band and the Patrick Henry Symphonic Winds Band also performed.  The evening began with the 8th graders performing "Ashland Park" followed by "Suspended Animation".  The 7th graders performed "Adventure on Snake River" and "March Slav".  The concert concluded with all three schools performing together for the first time ever.  After the concert, the students enjoyed an ice cream social and mingled with the Patrick Henry Band students.  Many of the Pershing students will be joining the Patrick Henry Band next year and you could see the excitement on their faces as they listened to the music and when they chatted with the high school students afterward.  Mr. Anderson continues to encourage and mentor these students and they improve with every performance.  He has been such a gift to the Pershing Music Program.*

The SDUSD Lewis Band Festival
March 7 & 8, 2008:

The Band Festival was awesome!!!  Each grade performs before a panel of judges and then afterward one of the judges does a clinic with the group. The 7th and 8th grade bands both received an "excellent" rating.  The judge who worked with the 8th graders said, "I've never seen a more improved band in the 16 years I've been judging the San Diego City Schools Middle School Music Festival.”  The judge who worked with the 7th graders shared with us, "You have a very big sound unlike most other 7th grade bands."  These were terrific compliments. The 6th graders also performed wonderfully, especially being their first time ever in a competition.*

Congratulations to the Pershing students who were named to the San Diego Unified School District's Middle School Honor Band and Orchestra!!

Under the direction of Mr. Mark Anderson, on June 19, 2007, the 6th and 7th Grade Bands performed "Pomp and Circumstance" at Pershing's 2007 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony. What a wonderful way to begin such an awesome celebration!
The Spring Instrumental Music Concert ROCKED! Mr. Mark Anderson, the 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Bands and the Jazz Ensemble entertained the audience with their musical talents. Click here to read more about this amazing concert.

From May 30 through June 1, 2007, the Pershing Band played the overture for the Drama Club's production of Disney's High School Musical (by special arrangement with Music Theatre International). They played wonderfully in all eight performances and were one of the many highlights of that production.
The crowds at the Allied Gardens SpringFest enjoyed a wonderful concert by the Pershing 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Bands on May 5, 2007. Their hour long performance thrilled the appreciative audience. They performed many wonderful musical selections including music from the Pershing Drama Department's upcoming Spring Musical Production. Congratulations on such an awesome event! *

The 6th Grade "A and B" Bands and the Jazz Band provided the musical entertainment at the 2007 Annual May Mixer for our incoming 6th grade students and their families. These bands made the evening even more special with their terrific performances! Thank you to Mr. Mark Anderson and all his talented students!
The Pershing Band received unanimous Excellent ratings from all three judges at the Lewis Middle School Band Festival.  The students were complimented by the judges on their concert dress, etiquette, and of course, their energy and sound during the performance.

Two of our band members both received an Excellent Rating for their Bass Clarinet and Flute Duet performance at the Solo and Ensemble Festival in February.

In addition to the Festival Honors, five 8th grade students were selected to participate in the San Diego Unified School District Honor Band.

Two other students auditioned and were selected for the Elementary/Middle School Orchestra Festival held at PLNU in Brown Chapel.

Special congratulations to one of our students who was chosen to be "Concert Mistress" for the ensemble. She was first chair for the evening and gave a special presentation to the conductor after the performance. WAY TO GO!
