Friends of the Library Essay Contest

 

 Contest Overview

Our 8th graders are encouraged to participate in this yearly contest. This is a tremendous opportunity that is open to all 8th grade students at Pershing. If your teacher does not assign this essay, you may still participate. Your essays can be submitted to Ms. Cheryl Spicer in the library or placed in Ms. Carleen Hemric's mail box in the front office by the due date. Please also remember to complete a contest registration form.

All entries must be typed (12 pt. size) and be a maximum of 500 words. Each entrant will receive a Certificate of Participation. There will be one to three winners at each school.

Congratulations to the Pershing 8th grader who was honored as the 8th grade finalist in the San Carlos Branch Library’s Friends of the Library Contest. She was also named as a city finalist. The city grand prize winners will be announced at the Friends of the Library Essay Contest's 11th Annual Awards Ceremony on May 1, 2008 at the Balboa Park Club.

Friends of the Library Essay Contest's 
11th Annual Awards Ceremony

Pershing's San Carlos Branch winner earned another award on May 1, 2008 at the Friends of the Library Essay Contest's 11th Annual Awards Ceremony, where she was named a Grand Prize Winner! At the awards ceremony, which was held at the Balboa Park Club, the Grand Prize winners read their essays to a cheering audience filled with families, friends, school representatives, librarians, and members of the Friends of the Library. Prizes earned throughout this competition include a Barnes and Noble gift card, $50, Padres tickets, as well as other items. 

Pershing’s librarian, Ms. Spicer, had this to say about our 8th grade winner, It was a well deserved honor…Her essay showed a comprehensive reading of Iqbal and a true understanding of how one person can make a difference.” Congratulations!

2007 Contest Results

2007 San Carlos Friends of the Library Essay Contest
March 26, 2007

Congratulations to all our students who participated in this year's contest. Three of Pershing's students were honored on March 26, 2007 at the San Carlos Friends of the Library Essay Contest reception at the San Carlos Branch Library. Also honored at this event were the winners for the 4th and 10th grade divisions from other area schools. All school winners read their essays to a large crowd that included parents, families, teachers, librarians, principals, and other local community leaders. These students received certificates of achievements while each grade level finalist received a Barnes and Noble gift card and trophy. Pershing's 8th grade finalist will now go on to compete in the city-wide finals. Grand prize winners from each level will be announced in May. 

Friends of the Library Essay Contest's 10th Annual 
Awards Ceremony
May 3, 2007

Pershing’s 8th grade San Carlos Branch finalist and city winner of the Friends of the Library Essay Contest won another honor on May 3, 2007. At the Friends of the Library Essay Contest’s 10th Annual Awards Ceremony, she was named as one of the six Grand Prize Winners for the city’s 8th grade division. Mrs. Sullivan, Ms. Spicer, and Ms. Hemric all shared in the evening’s festivities, which were held at the Balboa Park Club. A special congratulations to the San Carlos Branch Library. For the first time in ten years, all of their division finalists in 4th, 8th, and 10th grade were also named City Winners and Grand Prize Winners.
