6th Grade Camp Parent Packet:

A paper version of
this packet will be sent home with your child for you to complete
and
return by the requested due date.
Camp participants are allowed only ONE sleeping
bag/roll and ONE piece of luggage. Sleeping bags/rolls and the luggage
should each be tagged with one of the yellow luggage tags that have been
provided for you. Please
print the student’s name and the name of the school (Pershing) on both
sides of the yellow tag. The
size of the bag (total of the width +
length + depth) should not exceed 46 inches.
Bags should not weigh more than 35 pounds.
If they exceed this limitation, the luggage may be left behind due
to lack of storage space on the transportation vehicles.
1. Sleeping
bags: Please make sure
all sleeping bags/rolls are secured with heavy-duty rope, cord, bungee
cord or belts. Please do not use twine or string.
Putting tied sleeping bags/rolls in large plastic bags is an
especially good idea due to inclement weather concerns.
2. Plastic
Bags vs Pillow Cases: Some
students prefer to use large heavy-duty plastic trash bags for their
personal belongings. Unfortunately, these bags do not survive a week of wear and
tear. Therefore, it’s
strongly recommended that students use a pillow case if they choose not to
use the traditional suitcase. Pillowcases
will not tear or shred as easily as a plastic bag.
Please make sure if a pillowcase is used that it is tired securely
and wrapped in a plastic bag.
3. Luggage:
Generally there are three types of luggage: hardsided, softsided and the
miscellaneous types that might include duffle bags, garment bags, gym bags
and soft backpacks. The most
desirable type is the softsided bag.
These are lightest and easiest to carry and to load on the bus.
Please remember that your student must carry their own luggage to
and from the bus to their cabins.
4. Medications:
Do not send medications with students or in their luggage. Students
requiring medications at Camp Palomar should have their medications
brought to the Health Office at Pershing Middle School
by a parent or guardian. Medications
need to come in the original container, with prescription label.
Parents: if dosage has changed, include a note with specific
changes. Camp Palomar has a strict policy that students are not allowed to
carry inhalers. Inhalers are
readily available in camp, on hikes and in the cabins.
Camp staff members carefully observe and record the usage of
inhalers to prevent what might otherwise become an escalating emergency
situation.
Leaving for Camp -
On Monday of camp week,
students should arrive at school by 8:00 a.m.
and go to their first period class. Parents
are asked to drop their student’s luggage off at the West parking lot. Please
be advised that parents will not be allowed to drive in to the West
parking lot. If it is raining
the luggage will be dropped off in the auditorium.
