Raising Adolescents
 Lecture and Dinner

An
 Evening
 with
Susie Koske

As part of Pershing’s commitment to nurturing a strong partnership between home and school, we will be sponsoring a wonderful evening on March 8, 2007. Susie Koske, parent education expert, will be sharing her wisdom and humor about adolescence. Her lecture, Raising Adolescents - Helpful Tips for Parents, will provide you with practical ways to help guide your child through this time in their lives. This is a terrific opportunity for those who have questions or concerns about surviving and thriving during the middle school years. The 8th Grade East Coast Trip Fundraising Committee will be providing dinner before the lecture. Though the presentation is free, there will be a charge for the meal. Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. and Ms. Koske will follow at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is invited. During the lecture, a supervised “Movie Night” will be provided for children in Kindergarten and older. http://www.sandi.net/pershing/8thtripfunddinner.htm

After a rigorous audition process, five of our 8th grade band students were recently named to the San Diego Unified School District Honor Band. This is a very prestigious honor. They performed at the Secondary Instrumental Honor Concert on February 25, 2007 at the Copley Symphony Hall. Congrats!

On February 9, 2007, thirty students were rewarded for their outstanding sales during the ASB Magazine Drive last October. They earned a limo ride and lunch at Shakey’s in Grossmont Center. The students had a great time eating pizza and enjoying Shakey’s arcade.

Family Friendly Schools

The district has a terrific new way for parents, family members, and students to thank school employees for their outstanding work. Each month, through the Family Friendly Schools Initiative program, the district will recognize those employees who have provided exemplary service. In the Pershing office, there is a Family Friendly Schools’ display on the counter that contains everything you need to nominate a Pershing faculty/staff member for this special honor. http://www.sandi.net/pershing/famfriend.htm

Important Message from Pershing’s Librarian, Ms. Spicer: Pershing has more than 300 overdue books.  Some are textbooks that have been left at home since last year. The date due is stamped in the front of our library books. Please don’t be embarrassed if your book is overdue. Our library staff is very understanding and we will help you resolve this situation. http://www.sandi.net/pershing/library.htm

The 7th and 8th Grade Combined Band competed at the Lewis Band Festival on March 3, 2007. We will have a complete overview of this competition in our next newsletter. http://www.sandi.net/pershing/music.htm

The first round of the annual Optimist Oratorical Speech Contest will be held at 7:00 a.m. on March 15, 2007 (for girls) and on March 22, 2007 (for boys) at the Admiral Baker Field Restaurant. If you are interested, see Ms. Hemric or Mrs. Sullivan as soon as possible. http://www.sandi.net/pershing/optspeech.htm
