EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT

Over the past several years, PBE redoubled it's focus on academic achievement. Thanks to the efforts of our fantastic staff, the support of our PBE families and community, and especially much hard work and tremendous effort by our students, we are making strong and evident progress.

The Academic Performace Indicator (API) is the baseline score by which all schools are measured.
In the 2006 API tests, Pacific Beach Elementary's Overall API score rose from 845 to 873.
This is a tremendous academic achievement for our site.

82% of PBE's 2nd graders scored at PROFICIENT or ADVANCED levels in Language Arts and 92% of 2nd graders PASSED the Mathematics portion of the CST.

2nd through 5th grade students, including the Latino and Caucasian sub-groups, met ALL annual measurable objectives in Language Arts and Mathematics pursuant to the No Child Left Behind Act, as reported on the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) report.

COMPARING API SCORES BETWEEN SCHOOLS
When comparing API scores between schools, it is important to look beyond the summary score. Compare scores for like demographic groups within each school. While acedemic achievement is paramount in an educational institution, diversity is an important aspect to any child's social development, especially in California. At PBE, we are achieving our success across ethnic and socio-economic boundaries; keeping pace with, and even outperforming in some cases, schools that have much less diversity in their student population.

MUSIC PROGRAM

Pacific Beach Elementary has a wonderful vocal music program led by an Orff trained music specialist. Children receive specialized vocal, percussion, keyboard, recorder and music theory instruction one hour a week. They also explore movement and dance in a large, bright, music room. The children present two wonderful school musical performances a year.

For those who love singing and who are interested in further exploration of their musical talent Pacific beach Elementary offers an after-school choir program for 3 rd , 4 th , and 5 th graders. The choir meets at 12:15-1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays after school. The choir has many opportunities to perform at the school and off campus showcasing their talent and love of music.

Pacific Beach Elementary also offers instrumental music for the upper grades. 4 th and 5 th graders can choose to be in one of the two music group, band or string ensemble. These ensembles meet on Thursdays and Fridays for one hour and have a year end performance highlighting their work over the course of the year.
