Parent Communications and Involvement Workgroup (PCIW)
Overview Research clearly shows that when parents get involved, students do better. In January 2003, and in an effort to encourage parental participation in the education process, a Parent Communications and Involvement Workgroup (PCIW) was formed. Its purpose is to gather ideas, strategies and techniques for a comprehensive set of districtwide standards for parent communications and involvement. The PCIW participants, made up of representatives from each of our parent committees and the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) along with teachers, principals, school-based Parent Academic Liaisons (PAL) and instructional leaders, help ensure the group's efforts represent our diverse student population. As leadership positions rotate among the parent committees, additional members will be added based on Workgroup membership turnover. The development of the Parent Communications and Involvement Standards, aimed at engaging parents at four levels -- district, school, classroom and home - involved an extensive campaign of communications activities The PCIW was established from a three-year grant from The Annie E. Casey Foundation. The grant will also fund the reproduction and distribution of the standards. Standards Documents
